  • Fascinating Phoebe Gloeckner

This is an excellent collection of hard to find comix and artwork by the extremely talented (and controversial) Phoebe Gloeckner. The foreward includes a charming letter from the legendary Robert Crumb, and the book is comprised of many different types of Gloeckner's art, including paintings and medical illustrations, and is not limited to her comix work. Be warned---the stories are somewhat painful to read. They seem autobiographical, and the main character's upbringing was not altogether "normal." By the same token, they are also insightful, richly detailed, and ring all too true in depicting a step-child's life. This is required reading for those who love real life stories, and proof that comics can be great art, great literature, and for adults.
