About this product

Product Information

Riviera: The Promised Land is a fantasy role-playing game with a theme of Norse mythology. This North American GBA version of the game is based on the Japan-only release for the WonderSwan Color, Yakusoku no Chi: Riviera. Players take the roles of angelic warriors, summoned to the divine island of Riviera as a final, desperate act of the gods. Gameplay involves exploration and combat, and the storyline branches according to choices made. Mini-games allow players to unlock rare items and uncover hidden paths.

  • Not too bad, very different

I bought this game because it received a lot of good reviews, so I decided to give it a try. For a Gameboy Advance game the graphics are very nice, and the character designs are cute. The gameplay is what keeps me from rating it as excellent. First of all, you don't get to freely roam around like other RPGs, and pretty much everything else you do other than walking requires you to spend points that you get through winning battles. The faster win, the more points. Now I'm one of those people who MUST look at everything, but most of the time I don't have enough points to do so, so I have to constantly reset the game so I don't waste points on things that are not important (ie, simply checking the environment without gaining items or points). It's not a bad game, it just doesn't really stand ...

  • Excellent RGP for GBA

Riviera: The Promised Land is a turn-based RPG game with some elements from strategy and dating sim games and a unprecedented gameplay. The player takes the role of Ein, who must battle against demons as well as antagonistic Grim Angels to seal away the four Accursed. He is accompanied by four heroines — Fia, Lina, Serene and Cierra. By supporting these characters through decisions made in the game (for example in conversations) the player can achieve multile endings. Nontypical the player controlls Ein indirect through triggers in two modes (Move and Look). In Move Mode, the player may advance to previous screens. Each area is made up of several screens, each screen having triggers to explore and potentially battles to engage in. In Look Mode, the player may press directional buttons ...

  • An Overrated Game

I can’t get into the game more than five minutes without getting mad about the cat rose that is instructing you on basic common sense, like not to pick your nose when good looking girls are around. Well really just about nonstop the beginning dialogue and introduction things are not really fun or interesting. They remind me of something that I could have written when I was in the fourth grade and the teacher gave me a C on it because it wasn’t that creative. And that is what the game feels like, nice graphics and presentation, but not a story that gets me going. The review for the PSP version of the game was a lot more accurate to what I think the Gameboy advance one should have got. I don’t really go for RPG’s that much, this one really could not hook me in. I would have written better ...

  • Requires a special kind of gamer...

While it is very original as far as gameplay is concerned, this game can be very frustrating and repetitive from the first few minutes. The plot isn't very intriguing, and not enough to keep you wanting to play after you get mad at the random "press this combination of buttons in 5 seconds!" or "hit the button at the right time!" encounters. Things like that frustrate your average RPG fan, and everyone I loaned this game to had the same opinions. It's not bad, but it's not good. As far as Atlus games go, it's pretty bad though.
