THE RUTLES is a hilarious send-up of the myth and reality--mostly the myth--of the Beatles. Created by Monty Python's Eric Idle and produced by SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE creator Lorne Michaels, this mockumentary contains cameos from Mick Jagger, Paul Simon, Ron Wood, Bill Murray, and even one of the mocked himself, George Harrison. To make the comedy all the more exciting, this version was banned from United States television. Songs include: "Hold My Hand," "Number One," "Love Life," "Living in Hope," "Get Up and Go," "Cheese and Onions," "Doubleback Alley," and many others. It is not a stretch to say that without THE RUTLES--ALL YOU NEED IS CASH, there might never have been a SPINAL TAP.

    The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash cast: Eric idle, Neil Innes, Rikki Fataar, and John Halsey director: Gary Weis and Eric Idle 74 minutes (15) 1978 This spoof documentary on a Beatles-like pop group written and performed by ex-Python Eric Idle and ex-Bonzo Dog Band member Neil Innes, with plenty of cameos from George Harrison, Paul Simon, Mick Jagger (and Bianca), John Belushi, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd and Michael Palin. The songs are terrific and keep wonderfully in style with the Beatles sound. There is a segment where the Rutles appear on the Sullivan show, in which the original Sullivan footage is used for the intro--a simple but effective dubbing of "Rutles" for "Beatles" is used.     Monty Python Meets The Beatles

    What can I say? This is a classic--a priceless (and affectionate) spoof of rocumentaries in general and of the Beatles in particular, full of inside jokes and wry observations on the silliness of modern pop culture. It's laugh out loud funny even while it's making a larger, very subtle point about how we waste our time. If you liked "Spinal Tap," you will love "The Rutles."
