foreign film that keeps it real..
I liked this movie a lot. It seemsthat the director or the person who wrote the movie had a lot of knowledge on the subject and kept it authentic. I liked the characters and it didn't get boring, it had excellent flow. Good movie!

Latin American culture, current events and social changes are interesting to me and relevant to my work as a judicial interpreter. I had seen this movie once at my university, and was impressed by it's accuracy and authenticity in the way it depicted the people, motivations and methods that narcotics and other contraband are brought into the United States. This movie also depicted the callousness and cruelty associated with smuggling of narcotics and humans. This is not a film one would watch to be entertained. This is subject matter that informs, motivates and hopefully brings some awareness of the issues that confront immigrants in American society. We decry the fact that many come illegally or fraudulently to accomplish what this movie depicts, but we are slow to recognize that ... The film is in Spanish and filmed in Columbia and the United States. I was impressed by the portrayal of Maria's aspirations to gain something better in life than scraping by to provide for her sister's needs, and the urgency involved with adapting to the fact that she would have a child out of wedlock of her own. The story was well researched, accurately portrayed and well planned and produced. Photography was good as was the sound. This film is not for people who wish to be entertained. This is straight, and should have great value and benefit to people who are involved in the interdiction of contraband. This was a good purchase.

Not a "religious" film, indeed.
I wanted to see this when it first came out, but was distracted, (and as with so many films -- just too many to see), it got put on hold. But I'm glad I got around to it. While this film has alot going for it, I guess I still was hoping for a little more dramatic depth, that only gradually emerges by the end. But "Maria" herself was a more than capable young actress, whose plight, representing many others like her... is generally heartbreaking to see revealed. How spoiled we are in this country!! Where opportunity is in over-abundance, and we trash it with voluntary drug use, rap noise (called "music"?), pants around the ankles as cool?, and a fogged-over spirituality... as if our brains were pickled in Pepsi, and primed with chips and dip... while others ... I wanted to see this when it first came out, but was distracted, (and as with so many films -- just too many to see), it got put on hold. But I'm glad I got around to it. Though I did hope to see a little more call for help, related to the spiritual side on Maria's part, it was more of her self-reliance and brave determination that seemed to become her mainstay. Which is why I thought the title a bit misleading -- but the film more than worthy of the experience.

Worth seeing if only once
This is a great movie and don't worry if you don't speak Spanish (it has great subtitles). This film captures the reality of what it is to be a drug mule and the circumstances that lead some people to make that choice. I like that this is NOT a documentary. Rather it tells the story that is repeated many times in real life. Sad but true. You'll be pleasantly surprised by how fascinating this movie is.This is a great movie and don't worry if you don't speak Spanish (it has great subtitles). Shocking Truth Surrounding Drug Smuggling!
I had no idea this movie would be as good as it was(movie title isn't very catching)but after finally sitting down and watching it, I must say, this movie has a very powerful story line. Just what is that Maria is getting ready to swallow on the cover picture of the dvd(is what I asked myself)? It sure isn't candy that's for sure. I still can't believe this is how drugs are smuggled into the U.S. and farmore, the risk taken by the drug smugglers. No amount of money could convince me to even attempt to do what the girls in this movie did! One wrong move and you're dead! good grief!
