    Whats behind the hymns we sing, sorrow, pain and joy.

    The old hymns of long ago will never die out. They were written out of peoples experiences of life back then. John Newton that wrote "Amazing Grace" was a slave trader before God saved him. So, you see behind each hymn brings a story that makes each song precious to sing. I could go on and on telling of the lives behind each hymn that was birthed because that person was going through sorrow or tradegy of some kind. Then the songs of praise and worship where God has brought people through their sorrows or pain. They are the songs we sing that give us encouragement along the Christian journey today through our hurts and heartaches of life. These hymns have been perserved by God down thru the years for they have been inspired by Him for Christians all along the way. I am buying another copy ...

    What a wonderful book!

    What a wonderful resource for a music historian or church music director who like to add something extra to hymn introductions. Kenneth Osbeck includes the history of such favorites as "Am I a soldier of the cross", "America the Beautiful", "Trust and Obey" and 98 others. Easy reading, full of colorful antecdotes and factual history. I highly recommend.
