Bleak and Shocking
Intriguing mystery full of dark conspiracy. Roman Polanski’s neo-noir mystery Chinatown (1974) is a pessimistic look into the underbelly of high crimes in L.A. Polanski directs Chinatown with a gritty eye for the most seedy locations, haunting atmosphere, and suspenseful angles. You never know who will say what or when someone will appear. Chinatown is all about driving around L.A. looking for answers to questions interviewees don’t want asked. Polanski is so bold in his vision, but also bold in his subject matter considering who he is as a person. I should warn viewers that Chinatown takes several turns into dark material that may sit ill with some viewers. His lines are pithy, but also biting. John A. Alonzo’s cinematography is a stark blend of neo-noir style with alluring rooms and striking notes with more contemporary naturally pretty scenery. His wide shots are the most interesting as anyone can pop out of them at anytime. Anthea Sylbert’s costumes are gorgeous dresses and cool suits that are as iconic as the scenes they are in within Chinatown. Jack Nicholson is riveting and entertaining as the lead actor playing a private detective named Jake Gittes. His sarcastic offhand manner is funny and his serious demeanor gives his rationale a believable intellect. Nicholson is as cool and calculating as he ever was in his career. Faye Dunaway is fascinating as the femme fatale Mrs. Evelyn Cross Mulwray. A curious portrayal that hints at her character’s inner secrets. John Huston is so devilishly cruel here that I will not spoil a moment of his screen-time. Chinatown also has several neat cameos from Diane Ladd, James Hong, Rance Howard, and even Roman Polanski himself. In all, Chinatown is a hazy crime thriller desperate for morality where there is none.

First time seeing this Neo Noor film, therefore this film is a true masterpiece. This film inspired many film noirs that were done after. Just like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly did to many spaghetti western later repeases. Chinatown is a really great superior film to watch.
