About this product

Product Information

A true story of survival from one of America's most respected outdoorsman. "The first track is the end of a string. At the far end, a being is moving; a mystery, dropping a hint about itself every so many feet, telling you more about itself until you can almost see it, even before you come to it. The mystery reveals itself slowly, track by track, giving its genealogy early to coax you in. Further on, it will tell you the intimate details of its life and work, until you know the maker of the track like a lifelong friend." In this powerful memoir, famous "Pine Barrens" tracker Tom Brown Jr. reveals how he acquired the skill that has saved dozens of lives--including his own. His story begins with the chance meeting between an ancient Apache and a New Jersey boy. It tells of an incredible apprenticeship in the Wild, learning all that is hidden from modern man. And it ends with a harrowing search in which far more than survival is at stake.

"Brown is a tracker, a practitioner of a skill that faded away with the frontier in this country. He stalks men and animals, mostly in the remote Pine Barrens of New Jersey but also as far afield as the Virgin Islands and Wyoming."-- People Magazine on Tom Brown, Jr.

  • Very good book! I kid you not!

My dad had this book when I was young and tried to get me interested. I wasn't much of a reader. Finally I picked it up and could not put it down. I've read it a few times. I keep giving it away and buying it again. When my dad was winding down in a hospital room I took a copy of this book to read to him. We got thru it and each time he said it was like a walk in the woods - a break from the current reality. There's a part in the book when Tom is saying goodbye to Grandfather Stalking Wolf as he is moving far away and because of his ripe ole age, Tom knows it will be the last time he sees him. Those parts were hard to read to my dad. Very poignant. Very powerful. Read this book, and then buy the rest of Tom's books. You won't be disappointed.

  • Not Shakespeare

The writing is not of the highest quality, but it's good enough for an amazing experience. The stories are incredible. My uncle, a bow and rifle hunter and all-around wilderness man, recommended the book to me about six years ago, and I've kept the title in my memory so that someday I could buy it. I have not been disappointed. I actually haven't read the entire book yet, but what I have read is enough to tell me I'll enjoy the rest of it.

  • Get this book!

Wonderful book, it is not written as a how to guide yet it functions as such, very spiritual, hard to put down, essentially all the things that make a great book. This is one of those books that you might finish on a weekend and not do much else, it is that good. He also has a wild edibles book, I will look for that now as well because I know it will be a good product.
