About this product

Product Information

Co-written by antiques expert, Judith Miller and costume jewelry specialist, John Wainwright, DK Collector's Guides: Costume Jewelry traces the history of costume jewelry from ancient times to the present day. It also explains how social and economic developments, changing fashions, new materials, and manufacturing techniques, as well as the haute couture houses of the 1940s and '50s have influenced and inspired the industry. Over 1,500 collectible pieces are presented in full-color, in a catalog-style layout, with prices and sizes clearly displayed below each one. There are profiles of 20 major international designers and factories, including Joseff of Hollywood, Trifari, Miriam Haskell, and Christian Dior. In addition, pieces by 80 lesser-known names are displayed and priced, and there is a gallery of unsigned collectible pieces. Contextual notes explain the features that make the pieces desirable, and there are tips on what to look out for when buying. "Hot" collecting fields, such as Bakelite and Christmas Tree pins, are featured throughout. The book also includes a glossary of materials, a list of designer's and maker's marks, and a directory of specialized dealers. Book jacket.

This transaction gets a positive rating reluctantly. The CD plays perfectly, but the case is severely cracked. The seller's description indicated that the case was cracked, but I suspect that it sustained further damage because of inadequate packaging. A CD should not be shipped in a soft plastic mailer, even if it has interior bubble wrap, without additional protection, such as taping a piece of cardboard to the front and back of the CD.

  • A Favorite Guide for Collector's of Costume Jewelry

Several years ago, I decided to try my hand at selling a few pieces of vintage costume jewelry along with the textiles I had already been selling. I had always been fascinated by antique jewelry pieces and had purchased some lovely brooches, as well as a few pretty earring pairs, in high school and college. The only problem was that I had always just bought what I liked, paying little attention to designers or materials. In an effort to better educate myself on the subject, I went to a local bookstore and grabbed the only book on the shelf relating to vintage jewelry, Judith Miller's Collector's Guide to Costume Jewelry. Since then, I have browsed and/or purchased many similar books, but this has remained my favorite. Ms. Miller's book presents a wide range of designer signed and unsigned ...

  • Signed Vintage Jewelry

If you strictly want to learn about "signed" vintage jewely. then this book is for you. I wanted information on "unsigned" pieces. Therefore, this book was not very helpful for me. It is a beautiful book and contains some excellent history on jewelry.
