Yes, it's all it's cracked up to be; expensive, but worth it.

So far everything about this lens is superlative: It focuses noticeably faster than my older non-VR Nikkor 80-200; it zooms very smoothly and holds its position. The VR works great, image at 1/100th of a second is in super crisp focus with great color and contrast. Viewfinder image is bright.

  • Top critical review

    Super sharp but poorly made

The wide aperture gathers enough light to take photos at 1/8000 with a reasonably low ISO. I can stop the motion of bees and hummingbirds in flight and still have a clean image. It's great. The VR is excellent, too. The photo below was hand held at 1/13 second at the full 200mm extension. It is a 5 star lens, but I still have a complaint. The foot of the tripod mount is not arca-swiss compatible. It is 2mm too narrow and almost, but not quite, the right shape for it. For essentially no cost, Nikon could have made it compatible and eliminated the need for arca-swiss clamp tripod owners to need a quick release plate. It would have attached directly. :( One year later, I have a complaint. The lens is now 53 weeks old, so 7 days out of warranty. It won't talk to my camera anymore. Nikon ...

  • Hardest working lens in show business.

What's to review? If you're willing to spend $2K+ for a zoom lens, you probably didn't just stumble into buying this lens. It is in my opinion one of the best lenses on the market at any price. My Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 FL ED VRII is by far my hardest working lens. It has impeccable glass, it it FAST, and it's incredibly tough. I'm sure you Canon folks have similar stories about the equivalent Canon lens, so I won't bash the brand. But if it's this good, you must be very happy!

  • Best 70-200mm on earth! Prime like image quality!

This is by far the best 70-200mm lens I’ve ever owned and I’ve owned almost every version from both Nikon and Canon. It’s the most sharp, fastest autofocus and overall it’s image quality is superb. It’s almost as good as my $12k 400mm f2.8E FL is and definitely as fast to focus as that lens is too. The older 70-200mm VRII wasn’t a bad lens by any means, but it had its weaknesses for sure. All of those shortcomings have been fixed and this new lens is also lighter and much more balanced. Although only 110g lighter, it feels almost a pound lighter in reality. That’s how well balanced it is over the previous lenses. This along with the 24-70mm f2.8E VR and my 400mm FL is the sweetest most awesome setup ever. Now all three of my staple lenses are of equal quality and AF speed. That’s a first ...

  • It’s worth every dollar - and they’re a lot of them!

I’ve had the chance to use at least a dozen Nikon and Non-Nikon lenses. I can’t elaborate enough how happy I am with this one. Image is pristine, autofocus is extremely fast and very accurate - though I know camera is also responsible for that - and it’s truly well built. Yes, it’s expensive, but if you have the chance to get it, don’t hesitate to. I tried Tamron version as well, and though it does the job, that extra cost is reflected on the details.
