About this product

Product Information

The 35th anniversary edition of the classic how-to book that has helped millions of artists learn to draw. When it was originally published in 1970, How to Draw What You See zoomed to the top of Watson-Guptill's best-seller list--and it has remained there ever since. "I believe that you must be able to draw things as you see them--realistically," wrote Rudy de Reyna in his introduction. Today, generations of artists have learned to draw what they see, to truly capture the world around them, using de Reyna's methods. How to Draw What You See shows artists how to recognize the basic shape of an object--cube, cylinder, cone, or sphere--and use that shape to draw the object, no matter how much detail it contains.

    Good Choice!

I'm a beginner (at 65 yrs) and I found this book to be helpful. This concept actually delves into the "right hemisphere" of the brain.. the seat of our creativity. To create without analyzing or calling on our language (internal or external dialogue) is the realm of the right side brain. Drawing what one sees doesn't require analysis.. although it takes practice. I'm probably taking this farther than needed. Service & sale process was awesome!

  • How to draw what you see

I had this book years ago and it was an assigned book for a class but it comes in very handy for beginning drawers and seasoned alike. The section on portrait drawing was especially helpful. The break down on the sections of the face, where to place the eyes, nose and mouth can save a lot of time and tears in getting a closer resemblance from the beginning. Over all I like the book. Some places I felt it was overly technical in the illustration, as in the the chapter on drawing the figure. I would have much rather seen more gesture drawing but this is not Mr. De Reyna's style. So, whether you are a beginner or someone who just draws for fun this book will give you a good foundation for very nice drawings.
