About this product

Product Information

Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) is a cynical and self-deprecating former pop idol (the hilarious opening video introduces his '80s new wave band Pop!) who is now playing the nostalgia circuit, but has maintained enough dignity to turn down an appearance on a "Battle of the '80s Has-Beens" TV reality show. Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore) is a gifted writer with deep inferiority issues who's been hired to water Fletcher's plants, and ends up becoming his emergency fill-in lyricist for a song he needs to deliver to teen queen singer Cora (Haley Bennett) in four days. Despite this contrived "cute meet," the film, to its great credit, deftly avoids many possible rom-com tropes in favor of organic, character-driven conflicts and comic situations. Alex and Sophie fall in love, struggle over their song, and wrestle with their own respective resistance to romantic happiness, while simultaneously coping with the frustrations of the creative process and the demands of the music industry. The two leads (aided by great comic sidekick turns from Brad Garrett and Kristen Johnston) manage to pull all this off with a lightness of touch that makes the characters' vulnerability appealing and not pathetic. The original songs by Adam Schlesinger (the go-to guy for singer-songwriter film music) is charming and catchy.

An 80's Parody on the Band Wham!

I enjoy this movie very Much! It's about about a Washed Up 2nd member of a A fictional 80's Band called Pop! Hugh Grant tries to survive by writing songs for Pop Star who is more famous than Britney Spears. He gets the help from Drew Barrymore his lyricist . Its a romantic comedy!. I especially like the Beginning when it shows The Band singing Pop goes my heart. It reminded of the eighties, song is catchy Hugh Grant and Pop Band had goofy funny Steps and Huge Grant is dressed like Austin Powers!

  • Good Movie

I enjoyed this movie the first time I watched it. I love Drew & this movie introduced me to Haley Bennett (her first screen presence; check IMDB.com). But the "'Pop went my heart' was an earworm that took me a LONG time to get out of my head after the first time I watched it on TV. I haven't watched this DVD yet, I know what to expect, but it's a delightful movie if you can avoid the earworm.

  • POP GOES MY HEART for MUSIC and LYRICS :)

This was a cute romantic comedy. I really enjoyed it especially the "Pop" music video because it had a real 80's feel. Men and women can both enjoy it. Hugh Grant plays a washed up member of a famous 80's band. The band reminded me of WHAM! He has an opportunity to write a song for a popular singer to revive his career but needs someone to help with the lyrics. Then, he meets Drew Barrymore. She's watering his plants but has a talent for lyrics. It's a likeable effort from both actors. The movie is a little unrealistic. I don't think it is their best work but still highly enjoyable. It's a good date movie or rental.

  • Grant and Barrymore In a Perfect Romantic Comedy!

Music and Lyrics is ranks among the elite of romantic comedy films. Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore have just the right chemistry to make this movie what it is, near perfect. Grant plays down and out musician Alex Fletcher who had a huge hit in the 80's with his band POP! but has experienced a downturn of luck since. Barrymore plays Sophie Fisher. Sophie is a quirky replacement to Alex's usual plant lady, but she quickly becomes roped into a role as a lyricist to help Alex write a new hit song. The two have totally conflicting personalities and the sparks start to fly. From beginning to end this movie is laugh your heart out funny and plenty romantic. The music is extremely entertaining and the actors are totally charming. There is so little not to like about Music and Lyrics that ...

  • Music and Lyrics

Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant make a great combination in this movie about how rock stars of the past meets today's realities. Hugh plays a rock star from a group that was greatly loved in the past and with diehard fans wanting to hear more. Drew is not effected by his past fame, which makes this movie real. It combines humor, romance, chemistry and reality. Both of these actors make this movie what it is and I am glad to have added it to my collection. Drew is very versatel and this movie proves it and shows that she can play almost any type of part and does this one great justice. This is a feel good movie and isn't one of those movies that drags along making you wish that it was over. To me this was one of those movies that you wish wouldn't end. I really enjoyed it and I believe if you ...
