About this product

Product Information

The beloved, bestselling classic that became the movie, A CHRISTMAS STORY -- humorous and nostalgic Americana, reissued in a strikingly designed paperback edition. Before Garrison Keillor and Spalding Gray there was Jean Shepherd: a master monologist and writer who spun the materials of his all-American childhood into immensely resonant--and utterly hilarious--works of comic art. In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash represents one of the peaks of his achievement, a compound of irony, affection, and perfect detail that speaks across generations. In God We Trust , Shepherd's wildly witty reunion with his Indiana hometown, disproves the adage "You can never go back." Bending the ear of Flick, his childhood-buddy-turned-bartender, Shepherd recalls passionately his genuine Red Ryder BB gun, confesses adolescent failure in the arms of Junie Jo Prewitt, and relives a story of man against fish that not even Hemingway could rival. From pop art to the World's Fair, Shepherd's subjects speak with a universal irony and are deeply and unabashedly grounded in American Midwestern life, together rendering a wonderfully nostalgic impression of a more innocent era when life was good, fun was clean, and station wagons roamed the earth. A comic genius who bridged the gap between James Thurber and David Sedaris, Shepherd may have accomplished for Holden, Indiana, what Mark Twain did for Hannibal, Missouri.

One of the basic books in my library.

Not only is this book a great collection of wonderful original stories, it contains the original "Christmas Story." That alone makes this book priceless.

  • Prose Prior to the movie A Christmas Story

Being a avid fan and owner of the movie "A CHRISTMAS STORY", I decided to investigate where the original concept came from. To my surprise the narrator of the movie (Jean Shepard) was the original author of the book "IN GOOD WE TRUST, ALL OTHERS PAY CASH". This book was the basis of that movie and provides a somewhat historical account of what life was like during a simpler time. I not only need you to understand that I highly recommend, anyone that enjoys the movie should seek out this book, sink their teeth into it and further enjoy the humor of this most excellent american author. After finishing it, all I ask is for you to bow your head in his passing and promise to yourself that you will return home after many years and seek out your memories that formed who ...

  • A great read!

I bought this book because one of my favorite movies, A Christmas Story, is based on a number of the stories herein. Jean Sheperd was also a delightful storyteller on the radio as I was growing up. This book does not disappoint. Every story is hilarious! Marvelous, detailed writing. If you didn't have the exact same experiences as the author did growing up, no matter -- you will fully identify with everything he writes about. I am going to buy all his other books in the near future.

  • Good book if you like the movie "A Christmas story".

Like a lot of people I love the movie "A Christmas story". So I decided to read the book that it came from. Its a collection of Ralphie's childhood memories as remembered on a trip to his home town on a visit by an adult Ralphie. Jean Shepherd has a habit of being very wordy. Sometimes while reading I was tempted to skip ahead to get past these parts; but I didn't. In reading the book you will read most of the parts that ended up in the movie. Those are the funnier parts of the book. A good book, I would recommend this to anyone who likes the movie.
