About this product

Product Information

The Whip is inspired by the true story of a woman, Charlotte "Charley" Parkhurst (1812-1879) who lived most of her extraordinary life as a man. As a young woman in Rhode Island, she fell in love and had a child. Her husband was lynched and her baby killed. The destruction of her family drove her west to California, dressed as a man, to track down the murder. Charley became a renowned stagecoach driver. She killed a famous outlaw, had a secret love affair, and lived with a housekeeper who, unaware of her true sex, fell in love with her.Charley was the first woman to vote in America (as a man). Her grave lies in Watsonville, California.

    Compelling read

This story takes place in a time when women had a place. It was at home taking care of a husband and children. It does not work out that way for this particular lady. She started to have this life but due to other circumstances it doesn't work out. So, out for revenge she becomes a stagecoach driver ( masking the fact she is a women). It's a tough life, but she is skilled at handling the horses, and she adapts her lifestyle to that of a man. I found it to be a quick, easy read and finished the book in two sittings. I enjoyed it very much.

  • Top critical review

    Major Language Alert!

Because of the continual use of - what is to me - bad language I cannot recommend this book. I recognize that including such language supposedly makes the book more true to the characters. But Dickens didn't have to do that, did he? The book would not have been less without the f-bombs. In spite of that, I kept reading because the story was good! The author had several plot surprises and it was intriguing enough to keep me interested. Kondazian creatively and realistically filled in the sketchy facts of Charley Parkhurst's life.

  • The Whip

It is a great book. It keeps your interest. A very interesting story line. I read it in three sittings. A fascinating look at our history in by- gone years. Highly recommended.

  • Worth reading

It's an interesting story, sad; interesting because Charlie found a way to compete in a man's world, and sad because she sacrificed her life to do it. I never worked out whether she was driven by revenge or sorrow, possibly both.
