Synopsis
OVER ONE MILLION COPIES SOLD The life story of Ishi, the Yahi Indian, lone survivor of a doomed tribe, is unique in the annals of North American anthropology. For more than forty years, Theodora Kroeber's biography has been sharing this tragic and absorbing drama with readers all over the world. Ishi stumbled into the twentieth century on the morning of August 29, 1911, when, desperate with hunger and with terror of the white murderers of his family, he was found in the corral of a slaughter house near Oroville, California. Finally identified as an Indian by an anthropologist, Ishi was brought to San Francisco by Professor T. T. Waterman and lived there the rest of his life under the care and protection of Alfred Kroeber and the staff of the University of California's Museum of Anthropology.

    • Ishi in Two Worlds by Theodora Kroeber ( 1961)

I wanted to find out about "Ishi",how he and his people lived and where and how they lived. It's a great eye opening window into the not so distant past. This is a great book, easy to follow and understand. I live in the west side of the valley, & I see those hills, mountains and creeks they called home everyday. We hunt deer every year in "Ishi's" home land, so this year after our hunting trip, I bought as many books as I could find on "Ishi". This is the first book I have read and I really have enjoy it. It does make me ashamed of our "white" people and the way we messed up the "Yahi Indian World". The Yahi for hundreds of years knew how to live with the land without destroying it. If you would like some insight into ...

    • ISHI IN TWO WORLDS the real story

ishi the story of native indian is one story ALL american people should read //he was last stone age indian who hid out and lived his life like his people had for thousands of years // due to white people taking there land and trying to get rid of the native peoples // he lived in fear all his life and he in his later life had to give up due to age and all his hunting and fishing land took over by WHITES // we as AMERICAN PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE PROUD FOR THE WAY WE TOOK THIS LAND ///this land belonged to the native people and there has been a lot of injustice done to the true native peoples///the reason i purchased this book was because i had read this 35 years earlier and my book HAD fell apart and was not readable// so i wanted another ishi book to read and to remine me of the true ...

    • Memories

I worked at Olivet Memorial Park in Colma, CA. We showcased and inurned The hand made Urn of Ishi the last Yahi Indian. I would open and close the Columbarium on Saturdays and Sundays. I always walked by his niche. It was eye level and big black stone. Hand etched the word ISHI Caputal Letters. Always a broken arrow in the niche vase. I remember the day we got the letter for his removal and relocated to the University of Berkeley. Thank you for the book.

    • Ishi Da Man

A comprehensive look at a survival virus of a brutal existence who lived to inform us of how life used to be before the European invasion and who was a treasure trove of how life used to be and sadly is no more. Extremely well researched and written
