About this product

Product Information

The year: 1956. Four decades have passed since Eddie Lowery came to fame as the 10-year-old caddie to U.S. Open Champion Francis Ouimet. Now a wealthy car dealer and avid supporter of amateur golf, Lowery boasts to George Coleman--an equally important figure in gold circles and a fellow millionaire--that two of his car salesmen are the best players in the world. These two, U.S. Amateur champion Harvie Ward and up-and-coming star Ken Venturi, could beat any two golfers in the world in a best ball match, he claims. Coleman asks Lowery how he plans to prove it, and Lowery puts his money where his mouth is: Bring any two golfers of your choice to the course at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning, he tells Coleman, and we'll settle the issue--for a substantial amount of cash. Coleman shows up, all right--with Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, the game's greatest living professionals, with 14 major championships between them. In Mark Frost's peerless hands, complete with the recollections of all the participants, the story of this immortal foursome and the game they played that day--legendarily known in golf circles as the greatest private match ever played--come to life with powerful emotional impact and edge-of-your-seat suspense.

" The Match was a dream I never thought would come true. If I hadn't been there I wouldn't believe it myself, and if you know anything about sports or the game of golf, once you pick up this book you won't put it down. No one will ever see an event like this again. Fiction can't touch it."-- Ken Venturi, Frost captures an elusive magic in this improbable matchup and what it meant for those who played and witnessed it., "Frost weaves an exceptional narrative . . . It's a gripping tale--as good as James Patterson, John Grisham, or any other contemporary novelist could create. And all true. The match comes down to the 18th hole, and you'll be the winner once you turn the last page."-- Met Golfer, Frost...has a gift for dramatizing historic golf matches and making them seem suspenseful all over again., A fascinating story of the early days of golf in this country and how it came to be one of the major sports at the turn of the century., The untold story of golf's greatest money match, featuring Hogan and Nelson at Cypress Point, come to life in Mark Frost's gripping new book, The Match., "Frost masterfully puts the reader not just on the scene, but in the time, too, with terrific storytelling."-- The State (South Carolina), "Frost captures an elusive magic in this improbable matchup and what it meant for those who played and witnessed it."-- Publishers Weekly, "It's difficult to beat a good golf book, be it a good yarn or a picture book . . . The golf is spectacular, the course more so, the descriptions luminous."-- USA Today, Frost masterfully puts the reader not just on the scene, but in the time, too, with terrific storytelling., The Match was a dream I never thought would come true. Perfect!

This book was recommended to me and it certainly lived up to the recommendation. If you like golf and especially remember people like Ken Venturi, you will love this book. It was very interesting, very informative, yet an easy read. I highly recommend The Match!

  • The Match

The Match is an excellent book and Mark Frost tells a great story about the players and Cypress Point. He blends a great story line about the match with the life story of the 4 players. The book is better if you've been lucky enough to have played Cypress Point as I have but it's a wonderful read even if you haven't. I think the "Greatest Game Ever Played" by Mark Frost is the better book however as I think that is the best sports book/story I have ever read. As a side note if you're interested in the beginnings of golf in Scotland, especially St. Andrews "Tommy's Honor" is a must read by Kevin Cook.

  • If you like golf

you will like the Match. Actually I bought this book for the Ken Venturi autograph. I had read it years ago and enjoyed it a lot.

  • Amateurs Didn't Play For Money.

The real issue behind this tale would be difficult for the money-grubbing Jesuit-, Jew-, Mormon-, trained to understand. Amateur v Professional. Too much of a chance for anachronisms to surface. Then was then. Now is now. Not enough open-mindedness among most today.

  • Dive back into Golf History

A story I would have never heard of without this book. I love learning about the history and great players of golf and this took a deep dive into it while telling a thrilling story.
