  • Humorous sad poetic true endearing beautiful memorable

An exceptional story often told through a nine year old mind. Innocent and accurate. Raw and so true you don't have to use your imagination to relate. Oskar is an incredibly enduring character full of life and so much sadness. I will never forget him and hope that if I have a son, he will be like Oskar. This story is very often funny although the subject and characters all endure great sadness. Creative and striking in it's emotional imagery. The writing is like all of the details that happen in life you wish you could remember but don't. Relationships are strange and beautiful. There is a lot to contemplate and chew on. Very beautifully written and very well communicated. One of my favorite books I have read in the past several years.

  • Powerful Look at September 11 through 9-Year-Old Eyes

Jonathan Safran Foer is one of the first writers to deal directly with the September 11 attacks in his novel "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close." The narrative is enhanced with evocative graphics- including photographs, colored highlights and passages of illegibly overwritten text, reminiscent of Kurt Vonnegut's "Breakfast of Champions." As in his first novel, "Everything Is Illuminated," Foer takes a dark subject and weaves in offbeat humor with puns and wordplay. Protagonist Oskar Schell is a nine-year-old amateur inventor, jewelry designer, astrophysicist, tambourine player, pacifist and Shakespearean actor. His boots "are very heavy," as he is fond of saying, since his father, whom he worshiped, perished in the World Trade Center on 9/11. Upon discovering a key in an envelope ...

  • A unique book

This book often jumps from character to character or even decade to decade. Despite and because of this it is a fantastic book. Many reviewers say that it is from the point of view of a 12 year old boy, this is not really accurate. Foer weaves his story web with extensive foreshadowing and pastshadowing (I made that word up) The lives of oscar's (the main character) parents and grandparents are slowly revealed throughout to the book, which gives depth to oscar's interactions and actions. Foer paints a world not so different than the one we live in, only more colorful, terrible, and magical.

  • Magnificent

This is a book about an unusually bright boy who loses his father on 9/11 and struggles to cope. He finds a key in his father's belongings and decides that this holds the answer to understanding his father. This book was a joy to read - it took me a while to get to it, and I'm so glad I finally did. Best thing I've read in at least a year if not longer ...

  • I love this book
