    Hard to Find New Classic

Classic Shakespeare in a contemporary setting. Ian McKellen hits it out of tha park with an excellent supporting cast and production. If you find Shakespeare boring and antiquated, this will really pique your interest. This is usually very hard to find at a reasonable cost elsewhere.

  • Richard III w/ Sir Ian McKellen & Annette Bening 2000

The British Monarchy has its darker sides in history. William Shakespeare (1564-1616), English poet and playwright, composed "Richard III" before he joined Lord Chamberlain's company in 1594. Since many of his texts did not completely survive, I can only estimate, due to the plague, that it was written between 1592 and 1594 while the poet and playwright was coming into fame and was composing his historical cannon of the British Monarchy. The story was entitled by Shakespeare, "The Tragedy of Richard the Third." It follows directly after "Richard Duke of York," and that play's closing scenes, in which Richard of Gloucester (Richard III) expresses his ambitions for the crown, suggests that Shakespeare had a sequel in mind. There's no record of the first performance of "The Tragedy of ...

  • Sir Ian McKellen at His Very Best

If I had to pick just one performance by Sir Ian and name it as his best, in my opinion, this one would be it. First, because his forte' is as a Shakespearean actor. Although he's more than proven he can play anyone from a comic book character to a modern psychiatrist to a legendary wizard to a famous movie director. There's something so devastatingly evil about King Richard III, especially before he became a king. In fact, it's how he murdered his way on to the royal thrown that's the horror of the story. McKellen makes it delicious that evil does prevail. He makes even the most despicable personality have qualities of character with which we can empathize. That's the mark of exquisite acting. It must be so much simpler to play the lovable heroes and ...

  • McKellen's Triumph

Sir Ian McKellen is who makes this version of Richard III work better than all the rest. He's the Shakespearean actor who's even mastered "King Lear." He's Gandalf, Magneto, Emile, James Whale, & Hitler just to name the tip of the iceberg few characters he's brought to life on stage and/or screen. This time he's really evil incarnate. Magneto and Hitler somehow seem a bit tamer than Richard III as Sir Ian portrays him. Even Hitler could seduce great world leaders with charisma. But McKellen's Richard III has zero charm. He's narcissism personified. I don't know of another actor, looking all the way back to the beginning of films, who could have come close to channeling the absolutely wicked character of Richard III as perfectly as Sir Ian. He's the man! By the way, Annette Bening is ...

  • Richard III (2000) 16:9 anamorphic transfer from USA

I saw this movie upon UK release.... I bought the UK release on DVD, but unfortunately, they gave us a 4:3/Letterbox widescreen release.... no other UK release has yet materialized... the pity was that the sole UK release was in a format aspect size that was already outdated... people genearally had widescreen tvs after 2000/2001 (and if not, the manufacturers were at the point here in Europe of making only 16:9 sets in any event)... this IS such a great movie... people like me who don't care for "traditional" Shakespeare can really enjoy the wonderful time-warp setting of 1930's/ Art deco period London... and this works well... I had been looking for a full anamorphic transfer here in the UK for many years now since the release back in 2000/2001... a film of this calibre deserves ...
