Terry Brooks' Best Novel; A Must Have for Shannara Fans
First King of Shannara is the perfect book to start the Shannara series, or the perfect book to read halfway through the series. I have read all of Terry Brooks' books, including the Magic Kingdom series (but let's not go there), and First King is my very favorite. I have read it five times so far, and enjoyed it more each time. If you are a fan of the Shannara series, this is the most important book to read as soon as possible. This book answers many questions faithful readers may have about the Shannara series, and gives excellent background information on many of your favorite characters. It also explains in entertaining detail some of the very important events (such as Shannara's failure to properly defeat the Warlock Lord) that were merely glossed over in the other ... First King of Shannara is the perfect book to start the Shannara series, or the perfect book to read halfway through the series. Finally, I enjoyed this book more because it breaks away from the Lord of the Rings influence that you can see so much in the first three Shannara books (Sword, Wishsong, and Elfstones of Shannara), and also in many of the later ones. Let's face it, some of Brooks' passages seem copied straight from LOTR; seeing as how Sword was written right after LOTR saw a huge revival, that is no wonder. In short, First King of Shannara stands on its own against all of Terry Brooks' other works; its simple style but incredible story make this a must have for any fantasy fan, and especially for a fan of Terry Brooks. If you are just now getting into the series, then you owe it to yourself to start at the beginning.

Nothing better than a fantasy story that just could be true!
Sometime ago I came across some books in a box I had forgotten about. As I was sorting thru them I noticed 3 paperbacks that were by the same author. "Boy someone likes this gal", I said to myself. Next I noticed the titles, "oh spicy romance novels...yuk". My natural curiousity got me to read the reviews and see what these books were about. As I started to read I quickly found out that you don't judge a book by its cover. Not only were they not romance novels but she was a he Terry Brooks and this was the kinda stuff I love to read. Fantasy stories not too over the top as to be somewhat believable. The first in the 3 book series was "Runnin with the Demon" which after a few pages had me hooked on Terry Brooks. The inside cover listed many other books by him including a Star Wars story. ... Sometime ago I came across some books in a box I had forgotten about. Don't read this one first...
Even though this is set before the Sword/Elfstones/Wishsong trilogy, it needs to be read after the Heritage books... Story is soooo good...
