About this product

Product Information

Director Ridley Scott confronts hundreds of years of religious conflict in KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. An epic film set in Europe and the Middle East, the story follows one man's struggle to better himself and the world around him. Orlando Bloom stars as Balian, a French blacksmith who is mourning the deaths of his wife and baby when his estranged nobleman father (Liam Neeson) arrives and asks him to join the Crusades in Jerusalem. Mindful that conducting the Lord's work will help him atone for his sins, Balian agrees, and embarks on the perilous journey. Along the way, he reveals his gifts of inherent goodness and fair treatment of all human beings. Upon reaching Jerusalem, a city where his meager beginnings no longer matter, Balian earns respect and fealty, while the evil Guy de Lusignan (Marton Csokas) looks down his aristocratic nose at the former laborer. As he did in GLADIATOR, Scott explores the theme of a man who chooses his fate, instead of accepting the fate given to him at birth. Balian comes to life in Jerusalem, protecting the weak and defenseless as his father told him he must, and catching the eye of the beautiful Princess Sibylla (Eva Green), unhappily married to de Lusignan. Scott paints a stirring portrait of the struggle over Jerusalem among Christians, Jews, and Muslims. In doing so, he also shows the passionate fight for religious freedom. KINGDOM OF HEAVEN ably handles these delicate issues, effectively treating characters from all factions as individuals and not as stereotypes. By placing a virtuous man at the center of this conflict, Scott creates a powerful, universal story.

  • Disappointing! Not what I expected. Average.

I guess I just expected too much before I watched this film. I am a student of medieval history, the crusades, and the Templars and I expected an intelligent film (which Ridley Scott usually produces). What I saw was an anti-war "epic" wanna-be. The acting was OK. The battle scenes decent. The editing and camera work well done. The problem was the story. Historically, the film was surprisingly accurate, but the characters were not believable in this time period; specifically Orlando Bloom's character. It was like a 20th (or now 21st) century man thrown in to a world of political, religious and social disorder. The time of the crusades was one of fanaticism based on beliefs that the only way to heaven was by being absolved of sin; the catholic church in their greed to rule the world, ...

  • Does making a man a Knight make him a better fighter?

Ridley Scott brings to us another great film involving the Crusades and the fight for Jerusalem. Bailin,(Orlando Bloom), is brought face to face with his father in the very beginning of the movie of which he asks if Bailin would go with him to the Holy Land. at first he says no, but because of murder, he is forced to catch up. Eventually through trials Bailin finds his way to jerusalem inheriting from his Father, the Count of Ibbil, Lands and money and a title to protect the King at all costs. As the movie plays out Reynaud De Chatillion spurns a war with the muslim nation. Most of the Crusaders perish and Jerusalem is in danger. Bailin remains to defend the people and all out war for the holy city ensues. Who wins the fight? You have to watvh the movie. This is a great movie showing that ...

  • Please buy this movie!

Kingdom of Heaven is a great movie. It shows a new aspect of the war over the Holy Land, and who can argue with a movie starring Orlando Bloom? I was particularly awe-struck by the King's character. He suffered from leprocy and wore an ornate silver face mask. Somehow, even wearing a mask, the character is pulled off as a highly intelligent and emotionally valid character in the film.

  • Kingdom of Heaven

I watched this movie. It is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Has feeling. I believe it came from true events.I will always enjoy a movie with depth and meaning.Jim.

  • My Look Into the Kingdom of Heaven

I like best the insightful approach the writer took at the Spiritual side of the religious arguement. Il really gives food for thought about all religious wars.
