About this product

Product Information

This book, divided into two broad sections, examines the state in the Republic of Benin and the socio-political role of the Christian churches. The first looks at the remarkable pre-colonial kingdom of Danxom and its place in the imagining of the modern contrat social b ninois . The second section looks at both the historical role of the mainline churches and the more recent development of a Christianisme b ninois . The study concludes that the churches are above all a commentary upon the society in which they find themselves. Rather than an overt challenge to the state, they articulate social distress and the desire for a different future. In times of stress they may prove to be the only viable institutional buttress as well as the arbiter. This study seeks to make a contribution to the understanding of the public role of Christian churches in Africa.

Reviews
"This book is a bold and successful attempt to disentangle the threads of religion and politics in a complex society. It is an important reminder that religion never floats free from its social context, and that local histories often reveal more about the public role of Christian churches in Africa than grand theories do. As well as being an excellent academic text, it is also an engaging and quietly self-reflective work."Jane E. Soothill, The School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, African Studies Review , Vol. 51, No. 2

Accurate item description and pics. Great packing job with great care and emphasis on ensuring the item arrived undamaged using minimum packing materials and with conscientious use of recycled materials. Super-fast shipment at reasonable rate and arriving ahead of schedule. Great communication before and after transaction. Highly recommended A+ / 5 Star seller! Definitely one of my new favorite sellers and will purchase from again. Can't say enough praise for this seller. Highly Recommended!!!!!

This sellers "two day" shipping policy is baloney - it took a over five days and repeated emails before this item shipped. I almost thought I would have to request a refund from eBay. That being said, when it did ship, it was nicely packaged and arrived undamaged. I would not buy from this person again because they don't honor their own policies! I can only leave positive feedback because 1) the item DID arrive, and 2) it was as described. The rest wasn't a great experience.

I dislike complaining, but I'm unhappy with this transaction. The deck/book set, described as "like new," was mailed in such a flimsy envelope that it arrived twisted out of shape, to the point where one of the cards was stuck to exposed glue inside. I wrote to the seller about the situation but received no response. I didn't ask for a return because the price wasn't high, but even at this price I expect more care in packaging. (I have ordered other items from this seller that arrived intact.)
