During their seven-month-long journey, many of the other families on the trail suffer devastating losses, but Joshua's is spared. • Westward to Home by Patricia Hermes (2001)

This is one in a series of three books by Patricia Hermes. The books are based on the diary of a young boy on the trail to Oregon. It is great reading for my two boys 10 and 12 years old and they find it fasinating and can't wait to read and finish the books. Highly recommend these books and the message of hardship and family in our nations history. A great read even for an adult.
