  • A worthy book

    This quintet of perspectives of the American Indians was unique to me in that I have never read history of Native Americans written by Native Americans because the vast majority of such history is white historians looking back at history and guessing what it was like. Each of the five authors give different insights of their personal lives and each covers different subject of native culture. Two authors detail their forced conversions from native life to "civilized" white culture and all authors detail in different degrees their native spiritual beliefs. Black Elk's book was the most detailed which I found at time hard to follow during his extensive descriptions of his visions. He also details his personal involvement in defeating General Custer's army at the Battle of Little Bighorn, his ...
