About this product

Product Information

Based on a novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte (THE CLUB DUMAS) and coscripted by director Roman Polanski, THE NINTH GATE was Polanski's first feature after a long break following the release of 1995's DEATH AND THE MAIDEN--in between, there was an aborted project that faltered when designated star John Travolta opted out. Dean Corso (Johnny Depp) is a cynical rare books dealer hired by Boris Balkan (Frank Langella), a scholar specializing in books on Satanism, to recover the only two remaining copies (in addition to the one owned by Balkan) of THE NINE GATES OF THE KINGDOM OF SHADOWS, a 17th-century text with cryptic illustrations supposedly contributed by Lucifer himself. Corso's investigation takes him to Europe, where he is pursued by a strange girl (Emmanuelle Seigner) who seemes to assume the role of his guardian angel: Bizarre deaths inspired by the book's morbid illustrations befall all those who come into contact with the book--except himself. This occult mystery should satisfy fans of subtly creepy, stylish tales of the supernatural along the lines of Polanski's own ROSEMARY'S BABY.

    Heavy Duty!

The Ninth Gate is a fantastic movie. It has all the qualities of a much more elaborite, high cost movie. The scenery was terriffic, and the actor selection was absolutly perfect! I think the movie would be enjoyed more, by a viewer that had some background in this area of the occult. In that, it may be a little overwhelming to some. All-in-all, it was expertly directed, the plot was perfect, but, if Johnny Depp doesn't quit smoking in his roles, he will be dead in a year. I would highly reccomend this movie. I gave it the highest ratings. If you are still interested, in this subject, I would also reccomend, "The Ancient Book Of The Dead", "Complete Simon's Necronomivron", "Grimoire Of Honorius III", and "The Book Of The Sacred Magic Of Abramelin The Sage". After that, re-watch ...

  • The Ninth Gate

An all expenses paid international search for a rare copy of the Nine Gates of the Shadow Kingdom brings an unscrupulous book dealer played by Johnny Depp (Finding Neverland, Pirates of the Caribbean, Secret Window, Blow, etc) deep into a world of murder, double-dealing and satanic worship. He finds an unwanted assistant in the beautiful Lena Olin (Awake, The Queen of the Damned, Chocolat, Tv series ALIAS season 2,3 & 5) who has plenty of smarts, is able to beat up anyone that gets into her way and seems to appear out of nowhere. As the duo try to find the original book, they find plenty of trouble and find a gothic mystery where the hunter becomes the hunted and the devil must be paid his due-and his due is only found by figureing out the Ninth Gate. Director Roman Polanski (The ...

  • The Ninth Gate (2000, DVD)

A true Roman Polanski thriller well done and Johnny Depp delivers again a great performance as a rare books wheeler dealer Corso. I mainly purchased this movie because I fell in love with the musical score written by Wojciech Kilar. His use of prominent bass and celli create a thick, luxurious mood that soothes and almost disturbs. The main theme "Vocalise" permeates the entire score and is used at credits end, performed by the brilliant soprano Sumi Jo, is absolutely sublime. To all the movie soundtrack enthusiasts out there, I highly recommend the CD as well as the movie. You will not be disappointed.

  • The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows - DVD

A rare-book broker (Johnny Depp) hired by a wealthy collector (Frank Langella) discovers his latest find, a book written in 1666 may hold the key to summoning Satan. The engravings in the book are like a map to the Devil's Doorstep !! Johnny Depp is accompanied occasionally by a Guardian Angel (Emmanuel Seigner) or is she really one of Satan's Minions ?? They travel between France and Portugal to find the secret that has been locked in 3 copies of this unusual book for more than 3 centuries. I really thought this movie by Roman Polanski was pretty good. There is some murder, arson, and other assorted bits of violence all wraped up in a satanic feel !! It really is not that scary !! It has more of a mystery feel to it !! Check it out !! You can buy this DVD version on eBay now !!

  • Not Very Good

I went into this movie with an open mind even though I hadn't heard good things about it. Johnny Depp is a favorite actor of mine and I try to see all of his movies regardless of reviews. This time, I should've listened. Johnny is known for picking odd, quirky movie roles and excelling at them. He did that in this film, but the rest was just pretty boring. The idea that he was a rare book dealer was not only appealing to me (I sell & collect books myself), but also seemed to suit him. In the movie he is supposed to find 2 other copies of a rare book assumed to be partially written by the devil himself. His journey takes him to different countries, meeting equally different people. Along the way people keep dying in ways portrayed in the book. The ending of the was somewhat predictable and ...
