24 - Season Five (2006, DVD)
Wow, what an adrenalin ride this series is. Season five proved to be in "24" style a non-stop adventure with twist up until the last episode. I became addicted to 24 when I unknowingly rented season one from the video store. In a few short months we have viewed all seasons that are released. We like this show, but struggle with some of it's political presentations. Season 5 had all the same torture scenes and weak women characters (could the writers put atleast one strong non-narotic woman character that stays alive?) that we don't like, but it included a plot by the government that most accurately represents the kind of decisions our government is making for us today. Really there is no need to review this item, because once you start watching 24, you ... Wow, what an adrenalin ride this series is. One would think that after one or two seasons of a fictional story regarding threats to national security and the 'normal' manipulation of power in the world of politics, the story would end. Not so, and part of what is fascinating about 24 are the seemingly inconsequential connections amongst the characters, which smack of reality and even gender based politics in the work place. Simply put, every episode feels like a season finale. Having first been intrigued with 24 after reading the kinetic Season 1 DVD it didn't take long for yours truly to make a purchase. It did, however, take a few months for me to eventually watch it; having been forewarned of the show's addicting formula, I planned to delay the marathon until my schedule cleared up a bit. After an unexpected week-long break arose during the holiday season, I devoured the first boxed set in roughly five days. Since then, I've looked forward to the annual 24 DVD block each and every year---and though I could easily catch it on TV, something tells me I couldn't handle the constant wait every week. Season 5 works so well because the threats are more formidable and varied than ever, even though a few are slightly borrowed from earlier seasons. This time around, terrorists have acquired a collection of Sentox nerve gas, though how they were acquired remains a mystery for some time. Strategically placed in and around the Los Angeles area, these canisters of gas pose a threat to CTU and the general public many different times throughout the day. The returning President Charles Logan (Gregory Itzen) proves to be an interesting leader in his own right, appearing cowardly, sympathetic, vengeful, optimistic and unpredictable as the tragic events unfold. Super fast paced show Needed this one also to complete my set. We love this series when you can "binge" watch it. Can't imagine what it was like to wait each week for the next episode. I loaned it out to friends and employees and they are stuck on it too.
