  • Best criminal legal sleuth since forever.

This is number 3 of a 4 part series by Sarah Caudwell (starts with "Thus was Adonis Murdered") although they can be read in any order, all feature Hilary Tamar, professor of History at Oxford who happens to solve modern day legal mysteries when doing research at Lincoln Inn, London. Tamar is the narrator, who happily tells of her logical academic process of investigation based on gossip and innuendo extracted by eavesdropping and reading her friends mail. There are as always a few false starts but Hilary always gets to the end by the end. Hilarious dry wit and humor throughout.
