The Pacific War was the greatest and bloodiest war ever fought in the Andean region, and is one of the most important conflicts in South American history. It is also known as the 'Saltpeter War' or the 'Guano War' because the possession of these two highly profitable nitrates was the main cause of the conflict.By the 1870s Chilean military superiority and expansionist policies exploded into full scale conflict. This book examines the troops, uniforms and equipment used by the Chilean, Peruvian and Bolivian forces and traces the events of the war from the early naval blockades, through major pitched battles, to the final guerilla campaign in occupied Peru. The war ended in total victory for Chile, and that country's military emergence thereafter as 'the Prussia of South America', while it cost Peru some lucrative provinces, and Bolivia its outlet to the Pacific coast.

People who live on the East Coast rather naturally look to Europe and know less than we should about our neighbors to the south. I learned about the Pacific War in Chile in the high desert while taking the road to Bolivia, passing several important War sites. Armies of the Pacific War is an exceptionally well encapsulated history of the war noting the economic, political and military differences of Chile, Peru and Bolivia. The color plates, b&w photos and sketches are magnificent. Helpfully, it is also provided with maps. Reading it, I entered an amazing world of spectacular terrain,very modern (in some cases) weaponry and uniforms and differing motivations. The naval war is as interesting as the land aspect, and involves many transitional ship types. It is very much Jules Verne, like ... As a uniformologist, I was very much taken with the plates which were accurate in amazing detail, not only in terms of the military clothing, but the peoples involved. The magnificent desert and mountain terrain is beautifully depicted, correctly changing for the setting of each campaign.I highly recommend this riveting and informative volume. It is eye opening.
