About this product

Product Information

A Message from Mike Rowe, the Dirty Jobs Guy: Just to be clear, About My Mother is a book about my grandmother, written by my mother. That's not to say it's not about my mother--it is. In fact, About My Mother is as much about my mother as it is about my grandmother. In that sense, it's really a book about "mothers." ...It is not, however, a book written by me. True, I did write the foreword. But it doesn't mean I've written a book about my mother. I haven't. Nor does it mean my mother's book is about her son. It isn't. It's about my grandmother. And my mother. Just to be clear.--Mike A love letter to mothers everywhere, About My Mother will make you laugh and cry--and see yourself in its reflection. Peggy Rowe's story of growing up as the daughter of Thelma Knobel is filled with warmth and humor. But Thelma could be your mother--there's a Thelma in everyone's life. She's the person taking charge--the one who knows instinctively how things should be. Today, Thelma would be described as an alpha personality, but while growing up, her daughter Peggy saw her as a dictator--albeit a benevolent, loving one. They clashed from the beginning--Peggy, the horse-crazy tomboy, and Thelma, the genteel-yet-still-controlling mother, committed to raising two refined, ladylike daughters. Good luck. When major league baseball came to town in the early 1950s and turned sophisticated Thelma into a crazed Baltimore Orioles groupie, nobody was more surprised and embarrassed than Peggy. Life became a series of compromises--Thelma tolerating a daughter who pitched manure and galloped the countryside, while Peggy learned to tolerate the whacky Orioles fan who threw her underwear at the television, shouted insults at umpires, and lived by the orange-and-black schedule taped to the refrigerator door. Sometimes it takes a little distance to appreciate the people we love.

    Good

I liked & truly enjoyed the book. I think it might have even been better if the section dealing with The Whitehouse Visit would have been left out as the views shared aren't my beliefs and it tainted my opinion of the story somewhat.

OK but not as good as her 2nd book (About Your Father and Other Celebrities I Have Known)

Not as good as Peggy's 2nd book. In fact, I enjoyed the 2nd book (About Your Father and Other Celebrities I Have Known) so much that I thought I'd enjoy her other book, as well as 2 books that Mike Rowe had written (Profoundly Disconnected: A True Confession from Mike Rowe, The Way I Heard It by Mike Rowe). I thought this book had too much detailed information about things that were inappropriate and should not have been written about (TMI Too Much Information). When I opened both of Mike Rowe's books, I was turned off immediately and very disappointed. Apparently Mike Rowe enjoys sharing inappropriate information and is more of a shock jock in writing. His books were a 100 percent waste of my money. I ripped them up and threw them away so no one else had to be put through what I did ...

  • Boring boring book

I don’t know if I’m too young, although 40 is not young, but this book was so boring. The author made it seem as though her elderly mother was so out there and outrageous, but she was just an old lady to me. I didn’t find one of the short stories remotely funny 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ Had I not had to read this for book club, I wouldn’t have finished it

  • Good read, but not as entertaining as I had hoped.

Nothing too heavy, but not a lot of meat there, either. Just skims the surface, without revealing much about the title character or the author. The kind of chit-chat you'd share at a dinner party with mostly strangers. I was hoping for more funny, or something profound. It gives neither, and so is mostly forgettable.

  • "About My Mother" - funny & entertaining. Highly recommended.

Very entertaining book written by the Mother of Mike Rowe of "Dirty Jobs" fame. The book is not about Mike, in fact he is hardly even mentioned but it is easy to see who he got his sense of humor from. The collection of short stories revolves around Mike's Mother (who is the author), her Mother and their relationship. The stories are laugh-out-loud funny and some are poignant, it was very enjoyable to read.
