Reese Witherspoon stars in SWEET HOME ALABAMA, a charming romantic comedy directed by Andy Tennant. Witherspoon is Melanie Carmichael, a Southern girl who leaves her past behind in order to find success as a fashion designer in New York City. On the night of a hugely important show, her charming and romantic boyfriend, Andrew (Patrick Dempsey), proposes to her. It is at that point that Melanie flees for Alabama, hoping to take care of some unfinished business before Andrew and his mother, New York mayor Kate Hennings (Candice Bergan), discover the truth about her. The truth is that Melanie, whose real last name is Smooter, is still married to her childhood sweetheart, Jake (Josh Lucas), who refuses to grant her a divorce. As Melanie reunites with her parents and old friends, she is forced to reevaluate her new-and-improved self. In the process, she rediscovers a love that she thought she had lost. Tennant's film is elevated by Witherspoon's mere presence. Her rare blend of intelligence, wit, and beauty are a wonder to behold. Adding to the charm are Lucas and Dempsey, who portray characters who are hard to root against.

    my favorite movie

    this movie has been an all time favorite of mine. the characters take on a life of their own as the movie progresses. you feel like you are part of the scene. in life we all have different roles, but no one person is better than another. we are all human. this movie reminds us that we are all equal and love does conquer all.

    Love the South! Southern Hospitality. I was married to a Southern from Arkansas.

    This movie depicts how I feel, because I divorced my Southern man. Sometimes in life, those who mean the most to us have the ability to take their mate for granted. After several years of not being noticed or desired, I divorced my first love. I wish I could have the ending of this movie occur. Years have passed and he will not talk to me. Oh what I'd do, to be who we were, before he took me for granted. I really miss my southern man. As children, the first boy I kissed, over and over. . .

    Sweet Home Alabama DVD

    I like this movie because I love the South and enjoyed feeling like I was visiting a bunch of old friends and family, just like the title character got to do. It has humor and warmth to it, although I'm not so sure people who don't live in the South will appreciate some of the humor. I'm a Yankee who now lives in the South, and when I saw this movie in a northern theater, there wasn't much laughter, but when I watched it with my Southern friends, we laughed a lot more. But Reese Witherspoon is fun to watch, and seeing "Dr. McDreamy" from Grey's Anatomy in an earlier role is neat, too. There is some offensive language but no violence or sex. I recommend it for anyone with a good sense of humor who wants a light comedy.

    Southern comfort worth drinking in

    Great movie, saw it in the theatre when it came out. It's the first movie that I had ever seen Joshua Lucas in, his blue eyes, and shirtless scenes are enough to make a girl sigh with pleasure. It also re-introduces us to Patrick Dempsey, only some of us are old enough to remember him from such 80's hits as "Can't Buy Me love", (still playing on cable, and still a classic). This is a story about a woman torn between her first love (and husband) and her sophisticated fiance played by Dempsey. Dempsey's character is reminiscent of John F Kennedy Jr. As a woman you think this woman just can't go wrong with whomever she chooses, that's what's nice about this movie. There are no bad guys. But when he proposes to her, she doesn't forget about her family back down South and, more importantly, her husband back there, who refuses to divorce her ever since she sent divorce paper for almost 5 years. But when things don't turn out the way she planned them out, she realizes that what she had before in the south was far more perfect than the life she had in new york city.
