A tired old model kit, no longer suited to serious modelers, but may still have some life with new young modelers?
The Academy 1/72 scale Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat model kit seemed to first appear on the market in 1987. However this is a common misconception that has persisted among even serious modelers to this very day. However it is actually a direct copy of the FROG 1/72 scale Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat which places it's origins all the way back in 1972. At just over a half century in age, as of this review, it most certainly shows. Engine, cockpit & landing gear detail are all far inferior to what one should expect from a model kit still manufactured nearly a quarter of the way into the 21st century. Serious modelers do have the option of procuring resin wheels & photo-etched parts specifically designed for this model kit but it is hardly worth it considering that better options have long since become ... Among the most noteworthy include; Hasegawa in 1994, Hobby Boss in 2005, Airfix in 2015 & Arma Hobby in 2021. Academy continues to make this kit available up to the present day in 2023 for approximately $8.75 USD on the average. In theory Academy could devise a renaissance series, including many of their older model kits, by including 3D printed parts and/or photo-etched parts to them for much needed added detail in addition to perhaps a canopy mask to make airbrushing easier. I don't see that as being a likely outcome however. What can be said in favor of this model kit? Well, firstly, that would have to be it's simplicity & rock bottom price. It would be a good kit for a young model builder that is taking their first steps away from snap assembly kits to the realm of models that require glue. However, sadly, that's about all that can be said in favor of this outdated model kit. In closing it is this reviewers' opinion that soon after the advent of the Hobby Boss kit, which itself is designed for beginner modelers in mind, portrays greatly superior detail & only costs a small amount more than the Academy offering, production should have ceased then. It is a storied kit which many modelers have fond memories of when it appeared & provided "Western modelers" with a reasonably accurate F4F-4 Wildcat late in the Cold War just in time to replace far older model kits produced by Revell, Airfix & Aoshima. At least it would've been far better for Academy to permit this kit a more dignified & graceful exit from the market than dragging it on in it's current form as they have. As a brief aside, the model kit from which it is a direct copy, has not appeared under any label since 2002.
