Soon, some rabbits joined the fun, then two three-hundred-pound pigs. And no, these charming and eccentric animals weren't pets; she was a farmer, not a zookeeper. Novella was raising these animals for dinner. Novella Carpenter's corner of downtown Oakland is populated by unforgettable characters. Lana ( anal spelled backward, she reminds us) runs a speakeasy across the street and refuses to hurt even a fly, let alone condone raising turkeys for Thanksgiving.     GOOD BOOK

    I like this book because, the main character Novella is from Oakland and she did a very unique thing by starting a farm in the inter-city. I can relate because I grew up in Oakland. The book covers animals raised on a farm as well as nutritional vegetables. Novella is brilliant in writing this book as a memoir. The way she used her challenge to not eat meat for a certain time was purposeful and hilarious at the same time. This book is worth the money and definitely a good read.

    Original!

    I loved this book! Novella is a refreshing personality, to be sure. She has a great writing style, very down to earth. I was bothered by her use of profanity several times, (one word was particularly offensive). She tells of starting a garden in the vacant lot next door to her rented apartment...and how that progressed to, in time, having a small farm right in the middle of the city! I was encouraged by her resourcefulness and her ability to think outside the box. I highly recommend this book. I checked it out of the library, read it, and knew I had to own it!

    Excellent book

    Very well written book thats both informative and just a good read in general. In a way it reminds me of Anthony Bourdain by its comfortable description of enjoying the hardships of low budget life
