Works well with both Linux and Windows with the right software.

I downloaded VueScan from Hamrick Software and got the scanner to work with both Windows 7 and Linux Mint. I didn't test it in Windows 10 because some of the other graphics hardware I use doesn't play nice with Windows 10. The colors and graphics were amazing and the resolution was beautiful. With this scanner and VueSoft I can scan in both OSes and get great results.

    Terrible product if scanning slides

I purchased the scanner to scan over 1000 slides that were part of my father's estate. They hold many memories so I was hesitant to take them to a photography shop. I was willing to take the time to do it myself. The preview scan of the slides looked fine, but when it transferred the images to a file on my computer, all the slides had a red or yellow hue on them....like an Andy Warhol picture. I tried many of the suggested solutions on line, but nothing worked. Because it was an older scanner, I could not get help from HP. This made an already difficult situation, even more difficult. This was a total waste of money.

  • It's an okay scanner with lots of features, but you will have to mess with it a lot to get good results.

It will batch scan a lot 35mm strips at a time, that was my rational for buying it over the epson variant which only does two strips of negatives at a time. The stock software is pretty crummy, unlike the epson software (I use the v700 at work), so I bought vuescan software. It's quite a bit slower than the Epson V700, but to be fair the V700 is newer and a lot more expensive. I think my main problem with it is the quality of scans vary and it takes a lot of rescans to get a really good scan of negatives. I probably would have been better off buying something different. Flat bed scanning is okay, nothing that will knock your socks off.

  • Great for converting old slides

I purchased this scanner to digitize hundreds of slides from my wife's side of the family. I liked the fact that this scanner will scan 16 slides at a time instead of 4-5 like some others. I was able to try my boss' G4050 before buying one and I was sufficiently pleased to purchase one for myself. I have not been disappointed. As many people have stated, this scanner is no speed demon when scanning slides. On the other hand, you can load 16 slides, push the button, and come back 15-20 minutes later to repeat the process. I have been using 300 dpi for the scans and the results are very good. The scanner obviously works best when the slide quality is good (e.g., not too dark, etc.). The HP software has correction options but I haven't found an acceptable fix for underexposed ...

  • If you buy this printer, get Vuescan. Its worth it!

I first was exposed to this printer through my mother in law who has one. After trying hers, I liked it and bought my own. The program that comes with the scanner is horrible. It kept crashing my computer (win7), was hard to use, and the results were mediocre. However, after installing Vuescan, it turned into a brand new scanner! With Vuescan, the crashing stopped, the quality of the scans improved greatly, especially black and white, and the included infrared scratch and dust remover works a lot better as well. Its just a shame that I had to spend another $40 on top of what I paid for the scanner.
