Ray Merrell grew up in Marshall, Missouri, and joined the Marines at age 19 in 1942. He was in boot camp in San Diego for seven weeks, at Camp Elliott for 25 days, at Green's Farm for 21 days, back at Camp Elliott for six days, and then overseas for 33 months -- at New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, Efate, Bougainville, Emirau, Guam, Okinawa, and Japan. Upon returning home, he married Helen Treece, the girl he had dated before leaving and to whom he had written for three years from the front. Ray and Helen have been married 57 years; they have two children, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. After his years in the service, Ray worked at Uhrig's Locker Plant in Carrollton, Mo., was manager of M.F.A. Locker Plant and M.F.A. Elevator Grain & Feed Co. in Hamilton, Mo., M.F.A. Grain & Feed Co. in Moberly, Mo., and Schoeller's United Super Market in Liberty, Mo., where he was Meat Department Manager for 28 years. After retiring, he sold real estate for Century 21 for ten years -- before retiring again! Book jacket.
