About this product

Product Information

Edith Hahn was an outspoken young woman in Vienna when the Gestapo forced her into a ghetto and then into a slave labor camp. When she returned home months later, she knew she would become a hunted woman and went underground. With the help of a Christian friend, she emerged in Munich as Grete Denner. There she met Werner Vetter, a Nazi Party member who fell in love with her. Despite Edith's protests and even her eventual confession that she was Jewish, he married her and kept her identity a secret. In wrenching detail, Edith recalls a life of constant, almost paralyzing fear. She tells how German officials casually questioned the lineage of her parents; how during childbirth she refused all painkillers, afraid that in an altered state of mind she might reveal something of her past; and how, after her husband was captured by the Soviets, she was bombed out of her house and had to hide while drunken Russian soldiers raped women on the street. Despite the risk it posed to her life, Edith created a remarkable record of survival. She saved every document, as well as photographs she took inside labor camps. Now part of the permanent collection at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., these hundreds of documents, several of which are included in this volume, form the fabric of a gripping new chapter in the history of the Holocaust-complex, troubling, and ultimately triumphant.

I ordered this lot of 4 bridge books because I wanted one of the books. Price of the lot of 4 was cheaper than the price of the book I wanted from other sellers. As a bonus, I liked 2 of the other 3 books. Items were as described, well packed and arrived quickly. I would buy from this seller again.

  • How to survive against overwhelming odds

I saw this book when I was in the airport and read part of it at the bookstore there. I already had another book to read but it peaked my interest, so I ordered it when I returned home. The book came in excellent condition. It is a thought provoking autobiography about a young, educated Jewish girl who had 2 strikes against her by Nazi standards. She was both Jewish and a communist. This is a tale about how she managed to hide in plain sight and used her good sense and the help of good friends to survive. The story is also a reminder, that evil, selfishness and cruelty exists, and that life and security can change very quickly. But it also reminds us that there are many good, courageous everyday people who feel compelled to do the right thing. There are several books out on ...

  • The Nazi Officer's Wife

This book should be required reading for every high school student in the nation. This book shows a good example of blind faith and positive thinking that the Nazis would just go away or never gain power. There is a excellent comparison of the world we are in today. The liberal agenda gaining over the conservative principals while our economy, morals, education, plunge and our cities decay. Many of our politicians are on the take, selling their souls and our futures for gain for their selfish selves caring only themselves. Each day more of our jobs disappear to foreign countries. The crime rate increases and our young people have no future. The author explains how the Nazis took over Austria and destroyed any normal life. Jews were not able to work or serve. Forced to wear sleeve bands ...

  • The Nazi Officer's Wife by Edith Hahn Beer

This book took a different slant on the holocaust. It was a true story of a Jewish young woman, who became married to a Nazi Officer. The subsequent story of how she lived as a Christian German Officer's wife was in total contrast to how she would have lived as a Jew. It was not as graphically depressing as some holocaust books I have read. It was very true and believeable and told the story of a very strong and courageous woman.

  • The Nazi Officer's Wife

Bought it as the choice for book club and wasn't sure I was going to like it. But, it was very educational and thought provoking. This was one the whole group read and had something upon which to comment.
