John Sturges's remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 classic THE SEVEN SAMURAI has become an influential film in its own right. A small Mexican village that makes involuntary donations of its harvest to a gang of bandits led by Calvera (Eli Wallach) decides to hire a group of professional gunmen, headed by gunslinger-for-hire Chris (Yul Brynner), to protect them. Despite the meager pay, Chris and Vin (Steve McQueen) sign on after the Mexicans see them confront some racist thugs. As they ride to the village, Chris picks up some other gunmen, including Bernardo (Charles Bronson), Lee (Robert Vaughan), Britt (James Coburn), Harry (Brad Dexter), and aspiring gunslinger Chico (Horst Buchholz). The Mexicans, who are at first ambivalent about having gunmen hanging around their town, finally let down their guard and allow their visitors to teach them how to shoot and how to reconfigure the town to defend against Calvera. When the bandits return, they find harvesting the crops a little more challenging. This rousing, perfectly cast action film launched the careers of Bronson, McQueen, and Coburn. It also benefits tremendously from the unforgettably polyrhythmic score by Elmer Bernstein, among the most famous in film history. So popular was the film's theme that it was used to sell Marlboro cigarettes for years afterward.

    A Classic Western Movie

    An enduring classic among classic westerns, The Magnificent Seven presents one of filmdom's coolest 'man in black' heroes in Yul Brynner along with his gang of soon-to-be movie stars including Steve McQueen, James Coburn and Charles Bronson as well as future 'Man From U.N.C.L.E.' Robert Vaughan. It's full of vintage tough guy posturing, plenty of chest thumpin' and shootin' as the heroes help the poor and downtrodden villagers defend themselves against a gang of swarthy ruffians led by Eli Wallach. The Collector's Edition DVD special features are numerous for the movie buff including behind-the-scenes photos and reminiscences by Eli Wallach and (then)surviving members of the Seven, Coburn and Vaughan, Brad Dexter and Horst Bucholz. A must-have for fans of the western genre.

    The Magnificent Seven

    For fans of westerns, this is a very good movie. For some reason, it has never struck me as great or as good as The Searchers, Shane or any of the other "Great Westerns". I find now, as when I first watched it years ago, Yul Byrnner miss-cast and too unbelievable. The other characters fit pretty good for their respective roles. Coburn quoted this film as his breakout film, but watch him in his first western(film), Ride Lonesome, and you will see his star potential a whole year earlier. I can watch this film every once in awhile, mostly to see Eli Wallach and Steve McQueen.

    I met a woman named Renee who recommended I see this movie. Renee was a staunch supporter of the United States Constitution and she never knew how long she would have to work for her freedom. Renee spent three years of her life as a victim of the twentieth century’s first forced labor camp in Mexico City. After her escape, she moved to Los Angeles. It was here that she heard of The Magnificent Seven. Renee needed hope. And the promotional billboards for this classic film seemed to line almost every busy street in LA. This experience truly spoke to her. Renee decided it was time to procure a ticket to see this controversial film and happened to find herself sitting next to Steve McQueen himself in the movie theater.
