Beautiful and Emotional on many levels

Beautiful and emotional on many levels, this film takes you to a place few would be able to otherwise understand. As a musician who is also losing his hearing, this story touches many a raw nerve for me. The isolation, the outbursts, embarrassments, the inability of others (even family) to understand your condition, and what you are going through. Yet the triumph of Beethoven's genius shines through. There is a lot of truth to the story line in this movie. It is NOT all a fabrication. Beethoven did pen many letters to his "Immortal Beloved", including one found in his belongings after his death. Exactly who that woman was, we will never know for sure, but this film explores the possibilities. Gary Oldman (as usual) becomes the character he is portraying. Totally believable. The ...

  • Top critical review

A stupid title that was about someone who was probably fictional.

This movie has fabulous music, beautiful cinematography, wonderful costumes, was filmed in gorgeous palaces in the Czech Republic. The story is rubbish and the script is awful. Editing is terrible. The sound was very bad - music very loud, dialogue almost inaudible. Not the fault of the disk, which played with no problem. Waste of good actors.

  • IMMORTAL BELOVED IS TIMELESS

This story of Ludwig VonBeethoven is not only a classic, but one of my favorite movies of all time. Brilliantly written and produced, it tells not only the story of the abuse he suffered at the hand of his father, but his eventual hearing loss, and the loss of his 'immortal beloved'. Gary Oldman is nothing less than superb in this role as he brings to life the man whom we know only through music and art. Jeroen Krabbe' as his assistant and friend, is ever-faithful and supportive, especially to the end when he endeavors to find the Immortal Beloved that Ludwig speaks to in a letter of love, regrets and finality. The performances of Johanna ter Steege, Isabella Rossellini, and Valeria Golino are compelling and believable. The endearing music is beautifully executed, several pieces ...

  • wonderful moving cinema

Why is this movie not more well known? Story of Beethovan has always intrigued me. A brilliant composer who lost his hearing and then wrote an "Ode to JOY"? this is simply a great depiction of a great story, albeit fiction or speculation. Gary Oldham is outstanding as is the whole cast. I have it on VHs and now on BluRay and cannot watch it without being broght to tears. This demands much more accolades that it ever has gotten.

  • Beautiful transfer

The bluray version of this classic glows in it's audio and video presentation. It is magnificently shot and the Dolby True HD soundtrack does not disappoint. The only problem with the bluray is that it is so clean you can actually see how much make-up was used. I found it a little disconcerting, and by todays standards HD make-up is generally not an issue. Aside from that this is an awfully good transfer.
