About this product

Product Information

Inside the abbey of a Benedictine monastery on tiny Egret Island, just off the coast of South Carolina, resides a beautiful and mysterious chair ornately carved with mermaids and dedicated to a saint who, legend claims, was a mermaid before her conversion. Jessie Sullivan's conventional life has been "molded to the smallest space possible." So when she is called home to cope with her mother's startling and enigmatic act of violence, Jessie finds herself relieved to be apart from her husband, Hugh. Jessie loves Hugh, but on Egret Island--amid the gorgeous marshlands and tidal creeks--she becomes drawn to Brother Thomas, a monk who is mere months from taking his final vows. What transpires will unlock the roots of her mother's tormented past, but most of all, as Jessie grapples with the tension of desire and the struggle to deny it, she will find a freedom that feels overwhelmingly right. What inspires the yearning for a soul mate? Few writers have explored, as Kidd does, the lush, unknown region of the feminine soul where the thin line between the spiritual and the erotic exists. The Mermaid Chair is a vividly imagined novel about the passions of the spirit and the ecstasies of the body; one that illuminates a woman's self-awakening with the brilliance and power that only a writer of Kidd's ability could conjure.

  • An unusal love story with a twist!

Along the SC shores is the setting for this funny, touching love story between a monk and a woman who is not sure where the remainder of her life will take her. She has so much to deal with, her mom, who is at best, a crazy woman, her age, her children are grown and no longer need her, her husband back home, involved in his own little world of business, and her feelings of desire that have been stirred, strangly enough, by this extraordinary man. A strange combination of morals, love, and religion. Also a mystery throughout, involving her mother and the death of her father when she was young.

  • The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd (2005)

Top rating...5 stars...excellent. I listened to the audio (CD) version, and often had a difficult time making myself turn the car off! This was more than balanced, however, by not wanting the book to end, and so purposely stretching it out...trying to make it last!! Descriptions of the Carolina coastal lands were incredibly powerful. Kidd's use of the language brought one right into the physical setting. Also was even more intense for me, as I lived through a very similar situation, and could very easily -- and intensely -- relate to the events. Would strongly recommend you -- the reader -- let yourself get lost in the feelings, the ambiance, the milieu (!) of everything, and periodically, pause, take a nice, slow, deep breath, and exhale very slowly, savoring the smells of the water ...

  • A combination of religion, beliefs and love.

The author's ability to describe her surroundings shows she's done her research. I could feel the waves pounding around me when their little group went on that picnic to the beach. The main character has so much to deal with there including what she left back home. It was also a strange combination of religion, ethics and love. I did not purchase the book on EBay but whoever does will not be disappointed with this one.

  • The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd

Loved the story. Hits meaning in many ways for me...aging mother and at that age were you wonder about were your life is going. Recommend this book or cd

  • Wife enjoyed it

The content was ok. The wife listened to it on her 1 hr commute to work. She didn't complain but was not really excited about it. Worked well in the car cd player.
