You are part of a special group of agents from the UN sent to investigate a terrifying, mysterious spatial distortion called the Schwarzwelt. Cruel creatures reside there, whose only goal in life is to fight. And in true JRPG form, you take the fight directly to them in your valiant quest to save the Earth and all humanity.This single-player RPG is told entirely from the first-person perspective. You play as an unnamed protagonist who can summon a demon in battle to help defeat other monsters. The protagonist's Demonica suit can be opened to further explore the story. The top screen of the DS displays the 3D environment, which you navigate while you're in Schwarzwelt. The bottom screen is a 2D map of the area, highlighting unopened chests and already explored areas. Other characters you meet along the way will send you on side quests to explore new regions, find more items, and further unravel the mystery of this dark story.Combat in "Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey" focuses on turn-based random encounters, much like a typical JRPG. Your party of four and three chosen demons take on enemies that try to impede your progress. Critical high-force attacks and exploiting the enemy's weaknesses are crucial combat techniques in gameplay as they allow you to do a follow-up secondary attack. Your enemies will follow this style too, so play carefully.Recruiting demons plays a significant role in both the plot and the gameplay mechanics of "Strange Journey." A new demon can be made by a fusion of several others, passing along abilities, spells, and other traits that will help you in battle. These newly formed demons can be shared with other players with a special character password. There are 300 recruitable demons available in this game, most of which are figures from world religions and ancient mythologies, such as Norse, Egyptian, and Judeo-Christian. Pay close attention to the phases of the moon in the game when recruiting demons. Full moons will make a demon more aggressive and unwilling to talk, and even your character's behavior will determine how they feel towards you. Each demon responds differently to a lawful, neutral, or chaos alignment, and they may even ignore your commands if you stray too far into any of these directions.With a diverse cast of characters, including an advanced AI computer, angels, and avatars of powerful gods, "Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey" offers an exceptional JRPG experience. This game is rated M for blood, violence, language, partial nudity, and sexual themes.

    SMT Games I’ve neglected to get before Eshop closures

    Thank you!! I had an urge to look into the eshop for 3ds this month and saw that it was fixing to shut off in other countries and I thought “oh man, there are so many games I wanted to play and didn’t”. Then I thought it’d be best to buy the physical copies since no matter what I could play them eshop or not as long as I kept my 3ds console. I looked into which version was better, this or the 3ds remake, and hear that there was 4 hours worth of tutorial in the remake helped me make the decision for the faster paced original. Anyway, thanks!! It works great!

    The fidelity to the original SMT games is great

    It feels like one of the originals games of the saga and the mix of the horror atmosphere and increasing tension is amazing, remembers me movies like The Thing form John Carpenter. This is an amazing game for DS but have a noticeable level of difficulty and if you are not familiar with the saga you can enjoy it too.

    Another great game from Atlus!

    This is Atlus returning to the classic Shin Megami Tensei dungeon crawling adventures. That said, if you got into the series through Persona or Devil Summoner, this MAY not be the game for you. The demons are beautifully designed and there are plenty of them. Like most Atlus games it is a challenge at times, but it is anything but impossible. If you are used to the style of SMT it makes it a lot easier. If you are not, there is definitely a learning curve, especially with the skill names (dia, bufu, posumudi, zio). I really can't say much about this game other than it is a fun immersive turn-based JRPG, that has just as much content if not more content than console based RPGs. It takes about 80 some hours of game play to complete (though I hear it can be done in less, but still far over 40 ...

    Atlus makes another great RPG!

    When a mysterious black hole begins to swallow Earth, it's up to you and your fellow soldiers to save the world! Will you unravel the mysteries surrounding this phenomena in time!? Shin Megami Tenser Strange Journey boasts addicting RPG gameplay, a compelling story, and very unique features, such as communicating with your enemies in order to gain their favor. The game is also very well made, and has hours of gameplay, just waiting to be played. That said, the game is extremely difficult, and very slow. Not everyone will appreciate this game.
