About this product

Product Information

Pierce Brosnan stars as the anti-Bond in maverick director John Boorman's adaptation of legendary spy novelist John le Carre's seamy tour of post-Noriega Panama. A British intelligence agent whose taste for gambling and other men's wives has put him on the wrong side of his bosses at MI6, Andy Osnard (Brosnan) is posted to the backwater of Panama to atone for his sins. To that end, he recruits upscale tailor Harry Pendel (Geoffrey Rush), leveraging the man's financial problems and questionable past to gain access to information about the activities of his elite clientele. Meanwhile, Osnard remains true to form, recruiting the personal services of lovely embassy official Francesca (Catherine McCormack), and attempting the same with Harry's wife, Louisa (Jamie Lee Curtis). When Harry's best friend Micki (Brendan Gleeson), a former member of the anti-Noriega underground, now a broken man, begins blustering about politics in front of Osnard, both of these con men begin to see him as the solution to their problems. The mundane tragedy of espionage familiar to le Carre's Cold Warriors has been replaced by farce with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Boorman creates an atmosphere redolent with U.S.-abetted corruption in this well written and acted film, which also features playwright Harold Pinter in a cameo role.

This is an outstanding seller to deal with. Fair prices that are more than reasonable in this economy. The product is in better condition than described, a true value for my money. Packaged and shipped well shows seller has concern for the products he sells to arrive in excellent condition. The seller is friendly and communicates timely with his customers. I highly recommend this seller and would do business again anytime. Thank you.

Item is complete and 100% as described. Shipping was reasonable and item packaged well and arrived 100% intact though-out the shipping process. I would purchase from this seller again! Note: My 3 star rating for seller communications is due to the fact the seller and I did not communicate outside the simple transaction. I am sure that the seller would communicate well if the need existed. The "3 Star" rating on communication in no way applies to the seller. It represents a "Null" value.

Engaging And Entertaining With A Twist

A different twist on spy movies. Overall it had good flow and story line. I didn't like Pierce Broslin's character. I think it would have been better to cast a less well known acter for his role. I was having trouble bying his portrayel of the character.

Not Bronson's usual excellent work- bad directing. I answered some of the questions because only had yes or no -that won't get you the right answer

  • Pierce Brosnan in a subtle 007-type of role

This is a very different twist on a spy thriller. It's more subtle and conniving and undercover. And we wonder at the end if Brosnan as Andy, British Intelligence agent, will make good on his promise to the sad, disillusioned and repentent Tailor, played exquisitely by Geoffrey Rush (recently superb in the award-winner The King's Speech). I loved how it played out, and the wicked manipulation of Brosnan--almost like an Iago in Shakespeare's Othello--prodding the tailor on to nefarious deeds, knowing it could ultimately cause the poor malleable man's downfall. Brosnan's characterization was low-key but, I thought, brilliant. He always amazes me--as he did singing in the musical Mama Mia! I like him as an actor, and I always enjoy watching him. His good looks combine with a ...

  • Le Carre meets James Bond in a clever adaptation

If you are a fan of John le Carre's work, you will have doubts about Pierce Brosnan as the louche Andy Osnard of Her Majesty's Secret Service. You will, however, admit that, overall, this is a clever adaptation of a subtle storyline. The le Carre fan has to accept that the BBC set the standard with "Tinker, Tailor", "Smiley's People" and "A Perfect Spy" and that any other production cannot measure up to those in terms of faithful reproduction of all the subtleties of a le Carre spy story. Having said that, one must add that this production of "The Tailor of Panama" economically splices many touches of le Carre's original into a fast-moving story with twists and turns, and that it reasonably faithfully recreates the character of Harry Pendel (Geoffrey Rush). Harry wants to please everyone, ...

  • The tailor of Panama will engage you!

An interesting story – although it is copied from Graham Greene's "our Man in Havana". The principal characters – played by Geoffrey Rush, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Pierce Brosnan – are strongly portrayed. However, both Rush and Brosnan play very faulted characters (although Rush is magnificent as the tailor in the film’s title). The setting is suitably exotic and the cinematography is excellent.
