When a sick boy (Fred Savage) receives a visit from his doting grandfather (Peter Falk) who intends to read to him from his favorite book, he's not exactly pleased to be extracted from his world of video games. However, his mood quickly changes as he, along with the viewer, is transported to a place out of time--to Florin, a kingdom in the ultimate imaginary land, complete with dashing heroes, cowardly princes, rhyming giants, shrieking eels, rodents of unusual size, fancy swordfights, and yes...even some kissing.The lovely Buttercup (Robin Wright) learns that "As you wish" really means "I love you" when she falls for her charming farmhand, Westley (Cary Elwes). While trying to seek his fortune, however, Westley disappears at sea, an apparent victim of the Dread Pirate Roberts, who takes no prisoners. A few years later, Buttercup, engaged to the oily Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon), is kidnapped by an oddball trio of rogues--brains, Vizzini (Wallace Shawn); brawn, Fezzik (André the Giant); and sword, Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin in a standout performance). As they sail away toward the Cliffs of Insanity, they notice the pursuit of a man in black...and the adventure begins. Certainly not worth watching a second time.............
Maybe just my personal sense of humor, but this movie did not at all meet the expectations I had after reading other reviews. There were a few humorous lines, but it was a childish sort of comedy that I don't care for. The DVD will go into my yard sale stash..... I won't watch it again. Fred Savage and Peter Faulk were pretty good, but the rest of the story was lacking.

Don't let the fairy-tale title fool you. This is a clever, quick-witted comedy loaded with sharp barbs and impressive details. It is one of those rare instant classics that entertains different ages at different levels, and gets better each time you watch it. The rapid-fire banter between characters is impeccably-timed, and as often quoted as Monty Python and the Holy Grail. My favorite part of the movie is the duel at the top of the Cliffs of Insanity. Beside some genuinely fine swordsmanship, few people realize that the conversation Wesley and Inigo are having so courteously as they battle to the death is chock full of references to real-life master swordsmen of centuries past. Every detail of this scene is pure entertainment perfection, right down to the background music and sound effects. The Princess Bride is a rich blend of comedy, action, adventure and romance. It is a prized part of my movie collection, and truly a must-have for any aficionado of fine wit. You'll watch it again and again. To do otherwise would be ... INCONCEIVABLE!

Modern day fairytale that everyone will enjoy
This is one movie you'll never get tired off. I could watch it over and over. Wesley is jsut the hero everyone wants. All the charcters are likable and it shows that you can make a good movie without sex, language or gore. There are fighting scenes, but they are very mild and basically just for effects. The movie also portarits how hard it is now a days to get a kid interested in reading a book and how to solve that problem! We have the movie on VHS and DVD and in two languages, just to make sure that we will always have a copie, because this one you'll want to show to your grandchildren!!This is one movie you'll never get tired off.
