In 1917, Russian revolutionaries overthrew the last czar, Nicholas, imprisoning him and his family and executing them one year later. Shortly thereafter, rumors began to spread that one of the czar's daughters, Anastasia, was still alive. In 1928, a woman surfaced claiming to be Anastasia. Based on the play, and the fictionalized account of actual events, ANASTASIA tells the story of Anna (Ingrid Bergman), the impoverished, suicidal Russian woman living in Paris who believes she may be Anastasia. When ex-military leader General Bounin, deftly played by Yul Brynner, and his cohorts discover Anna, they convince her, through grueling training sessions, that she is, in fact, the real princess. Yet Anna's own unmistakable memories unnerve even the general who, upon finding her, believed she was only a fake. The climax of the film, in which the Dowager Empress (Helen Hayes), who is still alive, meets Anastasia, is poignant and riveting. Shot on location in Paris, director Anatole Litvak commands incomparable performances from Bergman, Hayes, and Brynner in this captivating tale of lost identity. Bergman won her second Oscar for her winning portrayal that introduces just the right regal note of doubt about her real heritage.

Great Historical DVD
The story was engaging and the actors were cast extremely well. Ingrid Bergman was amazing and deserved the Academy Award. Helen Hayes and Yul Brother supported well. One of the best older movies I've seen.

Ingrid Bergman won her 2nd Best Actress Academy Award and made her Hollywood comeback a big one with this movie. She had been censored internationally for her abandonment of her husband and daughter for the Italian director Roberto Rosselini, with whom she bore twins. But with the story of Anna Anderson, a not so wannabe Anastasia, we all wonder if she could have really been the escapee daughter of Czar Nicholas II (Romanov) of Russia. The movie opens with Anna standing at the Seine River in Paris during the 1920s ready to kill herself. We learn that she has tried many times before and has just been released from an asylum in Berlin. But because of a tattletale nun in the asylum, there is a rumor that Anastasia might be living and that Anna might be she. Enter Yul Brynner in the role ... Ingrid Bergman won her 2nd Best Actress Academy Award and made her Hollywood comeback a big one with this movie. The true test is Anastasia's grandmother, played by Helen Hayes, who has been sought after many times to prove that someone might be Anastasia. She is obviously very skeptical at first and refuses to believe that this woman is truly her granddaughter. But then Grandmother rises to leave, and Anna starts crying and calls her a name that only the real Anastasia would know. So now Grandmother is on her side. And we are wondering if this poor little waif could really be the princess. The DVD also has a special feature of the show,"Biography" on the A & E network, that featured a real woman named Anna Anderson, who claimed to be Anastasia. She had a very tumultuous life, and popped up in Europe about the time of the Anna in this movie. She lived twice in the USA. She was for a while a socialite in New York while she claimed to be Anastasia, then disappeared for a while in Europe, and then resurfaced when she married a Virginia college professor. She spent the remainder of her life with him. The show provides pictures of this woman and even her cemetery plot. Isn't that interesting? Anna Anderson died in Virginia and is buried there. After DNA testing became popular, her body was exhumed and matched with Prince Phillip of England, who has Romanov kinship. The DNA test proved that Anna Anderson was not Anastasia. As you can see, this DVD is well worth the money. It is also stated that Yul Brynner would have been nominated as Best Actor for this movie had he not already been nominated for "The King and I," which he won the Oscar for that year.

This is one of those keepers as not only is the story believable but the acting is the best. Ingrid Bergman has always been my favorite.
