About this product

Product Information

A co-production from the BBC and HBO, THE LIFE AND DEATH OF PETER SELLERS is a compelling dramatization of the late comic actor's life. Geoffrey Rush (SHINE) stars as Sellers, delivering a remarkable performance that deftly vacillates between the light and dark sides of Sellers' personality. Diving headlong into his character, Rush portrays Sellers' many cinematic triumphs--including a wonderful turn as bumbling detective Inspector Clouseau--as well as offering a harrowing glimpse into his personal life. Taking his radio work with THE GOON SHOW as a starting point, director Stephen Hopkins traces Sellers descent into the hands of his own personal demons. Illustrating how Sellers' relationship with his mother deeply affected him, Hopkins' film progresses to show how his personal failings began to get the better of him. Known for having an uncontrollable temper and succumbing to many bouts of selfish, and explosively violent, temper-tantrums, Sellers hit some remarkable low points in his life. Talking of "dark nights of the soul" may have become something of a cliche when discussing the private lives of cinematic funnymen, but the beatings that Sellers meted out to several of his wives should be classified as just that. Ultimately, THE LIFE AND DEATH OF PETER SELLERS is an unflinching portrait of a highly schizophrenic performer who couldn't bring even a modicum of the happiness he gave to millions of people on the cinema screen into his personal life. Despite his talent, it becomes hard, if not impossible, to warm to Sellers, with Hopkins leaving little room for remorse for the late actor, who died from a heart attack in his 54th year.

    Disappointment

I bought this movie mainly because of Charlize Theron, and she didn't let me down this time either. Plus she was playing the part of Britt Ekland who was a beautiful wild child in her day. Charlize was excellent, but the rest of the movie sucked. It was way too long, a good half-hour could have been cut out of it. That really wouldn't have made the movie any better but it would have shortened my misery. At times it was confusing, either that or it was just over my head. This movie was really a waste of money.

  • Convincing performance that belies a legend

This intriguing movie has its faults and hesitations but is worth a good look nonetheless. Yes, Geoffrey Rush is, as Blake Edwards underlines in the extras, a convincing Sellers and that is very important obviously, yet the youthful director has chosen to employ various screen techniques which cloud the issue from time to time, so that one is not quite sure where anything stands. Perhaps that is to his credit, as there was apparently something volcanic about eh central personality. For this quirkish screen character, who participated in WWII in ways that seem not to be fully documented (see IDBM), is always on the verge of not quite being there, and not quite being himself. So the film tends towards quirkishness as well, something which I enjoyed, but that might not please everyone. I ...

  • Good but also a bit disturbing.

I understood before I purchased this that as a fan of Pink Panther movies and Sellers, I might learn a little more than I wanted to know about the private life of Peter Sellers. He certainly was a troubled person who needed professional help, but apparently never received it. Perhaps the most disturbing part was the language. I'm not sure why a movie is not rated, but this one should certainly have been rated R. In which case I would not have purchased it. Vulgar language is very offensive to some people and I happen to be one of those people. I suppose filmmakers don't really care or perhaps they think more people prefer filthy language. I recognize it may be somewhat true to life for the characters in this movie, but I don't believe it would have taken away from the movie if less ...

  • Geoffrey Rush IS PETER SELLERS!!!!!!!

Excellent script and acting! This is Geoffrey Rush' best effort! My daughter is a HUGE Rush fan and personally I did not think he was that great of an actor, possibly because the roles I've seen him portray were average, until I saw this flick. A MUST for any fan of acting, comedy, and of course Peter Sellers.

  • Great Flick About Peter Sellers!

Amazing movie! Geoffrey Rush did an amazing job channeling Peter Sellers!
