Product Information

Director, writer, and producer Nancy Meyers's (THE PARENT TRAP) sophomore directorial effort is a lively screwball fantasy featuring Mel Gibson in his first romantic comedy. Gibson plays Nick Marshall, a high-flying chauvinistic Chicago advertising executive who, like his musical idol, Frank Sinatra, calls women "baby" and believes he has the world on a string. Nick experiences a rude awakening when the creative director position he coveted goes to Darcy Maguire (Helen Hunt), a savvy outsider--and a woman--who intends to aggressively pursue the lucrative women's market. While trying to brainstorm ideas for "feminine" products, Nick experiences a freak accident that gives him the ability to hear women's thoughts. Determined to win back his stolen job, Nick uses his terrifying yet useful new talent to scrutinize Darcy and finds his smart, beautiful rival may not be the "bitch on wheels" he imagined. Meanwhile, he also must maneuver carefully within complex relationships with his estranged teenage daughter, Alex (Ashley Johnson), and a pretty coffee shop waitress, Lola (Marisa Tomei). Once Nick begins to listen to the new voices he hears, his previous worldview is challenged, and he finds that he finally might understand what women want.

    Women do not want what he thinks they want.

    What if a man’s man kind of guy suddenly could read the minds of the women around him, and he hears what they really think of him?? What if he uses his new power to steal someone else’s plans? Mel Gibson plays a great role here as the jerk who finds out how things really are. HelenHunt does a great job of being first the victim and then the overcomes.

    Nick Marshall (Mel Gibson) is a real ladies man. He is a total chauvinist. He calls women "baby", and "Sweetheart", and he has no respect for them at all. He is expecting to be promoted to Creative Director, but is informed by his boss that the job has gone to someone else, a woman! Darcy Maguire (Helen Hunt) has been hired from a competitor where she brought in tons of new business last year. Nick is pissed! He is real cold about her coming to his company and determined not to cooperate with her. She's a doll! She is smart and to the point, and she is a leader. At an introductory meeting with all of the agents she gives everyone a box with about ten different things in it. These products are all feminine oriented. Nicks company garnered NO female business last year. All of these products ...

    The title What women want just okay only mot the best title.

    I did not think it was very good. There was not too much to be said for either actor. In other movies they very good in the roles they play.

    Funny and Clever Light Fare

    My partner and I had just finished watching a serious Mel Gibson movie. I commented that it was challenging for me to accept Mel in a serious role when the only other one of his movies I had seen was "What Women Want". I saw that in 2001 in the movies when it originally came out. It was such a funny and clever story that I still remembered it. While Mel was convincing in both of these movies at opposite ends of the spectrum, I found "What Women Want" much more memorable than the historical movie we just watched.

    I Guess Some Women Want Mel Gibson

    Mel Gibson would be wiser to stay away from anything regarding 'what women want' since his real life sexism is blatantly obvious to any savvy observer. I imagine he enjoyed getting to play himself in this flick--a chauvinist who calls women "baby," (I'd say, "that's Dr. Baby to you!"). Director, producer, and writer Nancy Meyer has finally played with Mel Gibson in a role the "heddon" (quoting the L.A. police report article on Courttv.com) belongs in. Using woman-defaming lines like "bitch on wheels," the 'wreckless speeding stud on booze' is exposed for the truth of who he really is both in the movie & in real life. The only reason I even bother to review it is because Nancy Meyer brilliantly outs Mel Gibson for WHAT he really is: a supremacist. Brava to her excellent work.
