    A sad finish...

    I love Gordon Lightfoot. I think he was the best storyteller of songs - ever. When I listen to his music, I feel like I'm a pioneer riding a horse through some country side in North America or a captain charting directions on some ship at sea. However, on this 1998 "A Painter Passing Through" CD - its just hard to listen to because Gordon has clearly lost his voice. Maybe the many years of hard drinking and cigarettes have taken their toll or maybe he's had some physical problems that has caused this - but, the "robust" voice is now gone. Although I like the songs and their arrangements, I just can't get beyond the "Katherine Hepburn" shaky voice. The odd thing is that typically the reverse happens to singers (Neil Diamond, Stephen Stills, John Mellencamp, etc.)where the voice ...

    I Absolutely Agree . . .

    I was so excited when I got this album because Gordon Lightfoot was FINALLY recording one of my favorite songs, Ian Tyson's "Red Velvet." I couldn't believe it when I heard it; where was the Gordon Lightfoot I remembered? Then I watched a concert special on television and couldn't finish it I felt so bad. But what really amazed me was that nobody seemed to notice! I don't know if they were cheering for the singer he used to be and I certainly didn't want him to be booed offstage, but doesn't he at least listen to the playbacks? I saw him in concert in the 1970s and it was one of the best I ever saw; no jokes or silliness, just the best of all his songs. I know how it feels to lose your singing voice. I used to be a first soprano choral singer until I had a thyroid tumor removed and ...
