Francis Ford Coppola's directorial debut, produced by horror king Roger Corman, is a terror-filled tale of family ties chopped to pieces. DEMENTIA 13's opening scene of Louise and John Haloran alone on a boat drifting nowhere (as an Elvis Presley song plays hauntingly) is reminiscent of many Hitchcock films. Its 1963 release was just the beginning of what, for Coppola, would be a long career of helming chillingly powerful masterworks such as APOCALYPSE NOW and THE GODFATHER.Set in a spooky Irish castle, DEMENTIA 13 begins as the Haloran family gathers to memorialize the death of the youngest sister, Kathleen. While various family members plot and connive, an ax murderer is roaming the grounds, and Kathleen's body shows up at just the wrong time. Slowly, the family members become increasingly suspicious of each other--as well as of the ghosts that haunt the castle. But when the sinister family doctor is called in to help with the mystery, the expertly contrived Coppola chills really take hold.

    ANAGLYPH 3-D

    This really is more of a response to the first review than a review itself. First of all this is a great old black-and-white mystery. It is worth the price just for the DVD black-and-white non-3-D alone but they have included 3-D as well in anaglyph. That means you need to use the red and blue glasses. In the first review the guy said there was no 3-D because using his SHUTTER glasses were useless. If you’re using shutter glasses there will be no 3-D because it’s in anaglyph you’re using the wrong glasses! Actually the 3-D effects are done quite well and yes they are added because this was never shot in 3-D but whoever did the conversion did a really good job of it - that’s all my input. I just wanted to clarify that one point - if you’ve got shutter glasses they will not work with this ...

    Fake 3D

    This is not a real 3D movie, just a really badly done conversion. Might as well not even put your shutter glasses on. Even that Japanese flick about the sea monster (another 3D conversion) was better than this. Might be worth watching if you&apos;re into old BW movies, but don&apos;t bother buying the 3D version, it isn&apos;t worth it.
