She is ecstatic, but when she and her mother arrive at Mr. Johnson's shoe store, her happiness quickly turns to dejection. Ella Mae is unable to try on the shoes because of her skin color. Determined to fight back, Ella Mae and her friend Charlotte work tirelessly to collect and restore old shoes, wiping, washing, and polishing them to perfection. The girls then have their very own shoe sale, giving the other African American members of their community a place to buy shoes where they can be treated fairly and "try on all the shoes they want."

The book is in amazing condition, above “acceptable” and shipped in a bubblewrap envelope. Though there are some soft color fading the top and bottom edge, it hardly seemed used and has that library book smell. Glad I took a chance because the description was general and there was no photo. Seller also didn’t provide additional description when asked. I received it in a torn plastic mailer that exposed the book so I’m unsure about its initial quality vs any damage that may have occurred during delivery. I attempted contact x2 to replace it with the correct version with no reply. Waste of good money. Don’t trust this seller to ship what you actually buy or package it with care. Bait and switch.
