About this product

Product Information

Soap opera met situation comedy with smashing success in this farcical take on daytime television that aired on ABC from 1977-1981. Exaggerating its intricate, serialized plotlines and overwrought melodrama, the show followed the exploits of two sisters, Jessica Tate (Katherine Helmond) and Mary Campbell (Cathryn Damon), as they navigated a complicated network of relationships between family, friends, lovers and enemies. Billy Crystal also had a notable role as one of the first openly gay characters on prime time. The hilarious storyline in the third season begins with an alien infiltration by a race known as the Sunnies, who kidnap Mary's husband Burt; meanwhile, Jessica must deal with her husband Chester's philandering ways.

  • The brilliance of silliness!

One of the funniest shows ever, has everything and the kitchen sink! This is definitely one of my favorite seasons when Burt is abducted by aliens. All the characters are great. Even with all the silliness the show is very human also and therefore easy to relate to; so if you love drama... In it's own way, would it have been the 'Desperate Housewives' of the day? Who knows, but definitely think 'Soap' paved the way for some of the great writing we see in dramatic-comedy television today. The creator of Desperate Housewives, Marc Cherry, had been a writer for 'The Golden Girls' which was created by Susan Harris, who is also the creator of 'Soap'. Susan Beavers also wrote for 'Soap' and in recent years she's been one of the producers/writers for 'Two and a Half Men'. With writing and ...

  • Great funny show, VERY LACKING DVD PACKAGE

I have always enjoyed this show. All the actors were perfect with the parts they played. The stand outs are Robert Guillaume, the late Richard Mulligan, Katherine Helmond & Bob!! Stand out episodes: Episode 3: My word, the Step Brothers scene!! Episode 18, when Burt decides to run for sheriff & plays sheriff in the living room with Danny!! I can watch those scenes over & over!! Very disappointing is the DVD package. No extras at all. Would have like to have had the surviving cast interviews. I would have liked to have heard & seen such a thing. And, the package itself, hard to open up.

  • hysterically funny!

this show makes me feel good...so funny and engaging!

  • Everything You Might Want

Most people expect overdone dramatics in a soap opera, and this series does everything it can to turn such a concept on it's head. You'll find this series taking from every cliche in the book from adultery, to near death experiences, to alien abductions. Soap offers a series that will make you cry, yell, and, above all, laugh. It's such a wonderful satire of the usual genre, even someone who hates soap operas (such as me) will love this series.
