Notes
Import-only reissue of this career retrospective, originally released on LP and cassette in the U.S in 1978. The duo of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker created some of the classiest, most sophisticated pop music of the 70's. Their compositions are so musically complex and fascinating that the Julliard actually offers a class devoted to their music. Features all 18 tracks from the original release, including 'Do It Again', 'Reeling in the Years', 'Bodhisattva', 'Rikki Don't Lose That Number', 'Any Major Dude (Will Tell Ya)','Here at the Western World' (originally issued only as a B-side), 'Doctor Wu', 'Black Friday', 'Peg' and 'Josie'. Universal.

    70s

Prior to taking the name "Steely Dan", this band was named "The Leather Canary." The original drummer for this band was none other than the comedian Chevy Chase. Unfortunately, I cannot reveal the origin of the name "Steely Dan" as it would not be appropriate. Steely Dan appeared on the scene in 1972. It is a unique type of music. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were the core members of the band using different studio and session musicians. Although Steely Dan has given a few live performances, they never embarked on actual concert tours. Despite this fact, they made their mark in the history of rock 'n' roll and were able to sustain a high level of popularity and album sales. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were excellent lyricists which, to me, is just as important as the music itself. I ...

  • An all time great album of music

I didn't know SteelyDan's music in the 1980's. I stumbled across this album and it introduced me to their music. I listened to it for years, then started acquiring other Steely Dan albums. Steely Dan is one of the best groups of the 1970's and onward, and this is a great introduction to their music. In reality, each song is a work of art. Some consider this a jazz-rock fusion, and I think this could be valid in a way. But I think their history is more that they are an evolved and sophisticated rock group. However, what ever conceptualization you place on these men, the music is great.
