Product Information

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - NOW A STARZ ORIGINAL SERIES Unrivaled storytelling. Unforgettable characters. Rich historical detail. These are the hallmarks of Diana Gabaldon's work. Her New York Times bestselling Outlander novels have earned the praise of critics and captured the hearts of millions of fans. Here is the story that started it all, introducing two remarkable characters, Claire Beauchamp Randall and Jamie Fraser, in a spellbinding novel of passion and history that combines exhilarating adventure with a love story for the ages. One of the top ten best-loved novels in America, as seen on PBS's The Great American Read Scottish Highlands, 1945. Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach--an "outlander"--in a Scotland torn by war and raiding clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743. Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of a world that threatens her life, and may shatter her heart. Marooned amid danger, passion, and violence, Claire learns her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives. Praise for Diana Gabaldon's Outlander novels "Marvelous and fantastic adventures, romance, sex . . . perfect escape reading." -- San Francisco Chronicle , on Outlander "History comes deliciously alive on the page." --New York Daily News , on Outlander "Gabaldon is a born storyteller. . . . The pages practically turn themselves." -- The Arizona Republic , on Dragonfly in Amber "Triumphant . . . Her use of historical detail and a truly adult love story confirm Gabaldon as a superior writer." -- Publishers Weekly , on Voyager "Unforgettable characters . . . richly embroidered with historical detail." -- The Cincinnati Post , on Drums of Autumn "A grand adventure written on a canvas that probes the heart, weighs the soul and measures the human spirit across centuries]." --CNN , on The Fiery Cross "The large scope of the novel allows Gabaldon to do what she does best, paint in exquisite detail the lives of her characters." -- Booklist , on A Breath of Snow and Ashes "Features all the passion and swashbuckling that fans of this historical fantasy series have come to expect." -- People , on Written in My Own Heart's Blood

Great story! Buy the larger size 9"X"6 if you can find it.

An awesome story about the romance between an English time traveler and an 18th century Scottish Highlander during the uprising of 1745. The large trade paperback 9"X"6 is a comfortable size and print for reading. Outlander is the first book of a series of 8 and each book is around 700+ pages so it will keep you busy for a while.

  • Unexpected Depth from an Old Plot Line

There are many novels dealing with romance and time travel; even many where the heroine travels to the past and falls in love with a dashing gentleman. But the basis of the plot line is all that 'Outlander' has in common with everyday romance novels. Claire Randall has survived serving as a nurse during WWII. She and her husband, Frank, retreat to a quaint Scottish Bed and Breakfast to relax and enjoy each other's company now that the war is over. Frank's interest in history and the surprising fact that their landlady dances in the stone circles leads Claire to be in the wrong place at the wrong time....or perhaps it's the right place at the right time. Claire travels almost two hundred years into the past, to the time of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the last stand of the Scottish clans. ...

  • If I had 100 Thumbs they's all be up!!!

I can not rave enough on this book and the entire series. The characters are so real to me now I expect them to walk in the room. This is a time travel book and is full of historical facts, events from 18th century Scotland. Gabaldon is very acurate of Scottish life in this time period. A romantic story full of love, hate, war, highland violence and intrugue. Language is moderate. Some sex, but scenes are not overly offensive. Characters are bright and vivid. Very LONG books, but they did end too soon! I Recommend all the Outlander books by this author.

  • Outlander Series

My niece read all the books three times each. She recommended them and lent them to me. I read a lot. Up 'til now, my favorite book has been " The Thornbirds ". I'm on the third book and I read it constantly....sometimes when I'm driving. I cannot put the book(s) down. Very smooth reading. I'm not a fast reader, but I can breeze through one of these like there's no tomorrow. I highly recommend it to anyone who has a heart, enjoys historical details of the 18th century and/or likes to climb into bed on a rainy day with a good book and read away. On your scale of 1-5, I give it a 10. Thank you for this space to help promote this book. smd

  • Best book ever

I'm not much into reading but I picked this up and finished it in just a few days. It's great, entertaining, romantic and I love how the characters are portrayed. I've got the second one on the way and cant wait til its here. By far the best book I've ever read.
