R710 as good as it gets

Product as described. Absence of memory was not an issue as I already have 48GB left after previous project. Installed memory, added caddies and drives and it is exactly what I was looking for. CacheCade on PERC H700 is a very nice feature if you are looking for performance increase on cheap for your disk array. Server also came with additional Fibre Channel and networking adapters. Fibre Channel was a bit old but managed to make work it with VMWare ESXi. H700 and networking worked OOB with Dell/EMC VMWare custom image. All in all - pretty good.

  • Amazing Value!

This server was once an expensive machine several generations ago. Now, all parts for it can be found for it and it can be maxed out for around $500! What a steal! Supports up to six cores per socket with four sockets. Has more RAM slots than you can shake a stick at and supports somewhere north of 500GB of ddr3 ram.

  • Awesome for plex

I bought this hoping it would work for plex media server. I am very happy with it. It draws ~160 watts at idle for me with 4 spinning disks in it. It displays 24 cores to my operating system that sees each thread as a separate cpu. It has been stable since I started it last week which I couldn’t say about my old system. Anyone wondering if the raid card supports Hba mode or it mode, for me it did not, but I have a card that does and with some mini sas to mini sas cables the card I have plugs right into the backplane! It is awesome. So much power for such a great deal! I didn’t use the raid card this time but I may in the future.

  • Dell R710 for homelab

This 10 year old server runs great for my purposes and couldn’t be happier. I use it as a home lab and installed Proxmox on it as a hyper visor. In less than an hour I had the hardware installed and the software configured running. I now have 6 vm’s, a docker cluster managed by Portainer and a Home Assistant home automation image up and running within a few days. This server was an ideal purchase and I am very happy. It’s quiet, there is room to upgrade and plenty of horsepower for a home user in 2020.

  • r710 best value

the server came well paclaged and was a really good value for the price. It had everything it said and seems to be in working order. Im waiting on the drives i ordered for it to really start using it. I was very clean on the inside and must have come from a clean server room. ###update 2/1/21 I have the drives installed and the server runs great! I've setup a 7days2die dedicated server and its a lot of fun. I have server2019 on it at the moment but im gonna put ESXi on it and run some vms on it as soon as my 180day license expires. Bottom Line= Great Server at a Great Price!
