Am 6./16. November 1632 tobte nahe Lützen eine der verlustreichsten Schlachten des Dreißigjährigen Krieges. 12 800 Mann Infanterie und 6200 Berittene auf schwedischer Seite standen 17 000 kaiserlichen Soldaten unter Wallenstein gegenüber. Der führte nach den Kämpfen seine Armee zurück nach Böhmen. Die Verbindungslinien zu den Ostseehäfen hatten die Schweden gerettet. Gustav II. Adolf aber, ihr König, war 38-jährig gefallen. Ausgeplündert, nur mit drei Hemden und einem Paar Leinenstrümpfen bekleidet, lag der Tote auf dem Schlachtfeld. Diese Geschehnisse bilden bis heute das bekannteste Datum der schwedischen Geschichte. Früh begann der Kult um Gustav Adolf. Und auch die Legendenbildung. Heute relativieren wir vieles, weil wir Kriege nicht länger im romantischen Licht sehen. Gründe genug also, die Kraft der Erinnerung wachzurufen in einem deutsch-schwedischen Projekt mit aussagekräftigen Zeugnissen durch die Jahrhunderte, wie es noch keines gegeben hat. So rückt ein ferner Krieg in unsere Nähe.
